ACC considering 2vs3 in ACC Champ 🏈 game! Good grief drop it & play week 0
Rivalry games. Just go to 16 no byes and start the season a week early. Let Army Navy play the Saturday after Thanksgiving weekend, and start the 16 season playoff the following week.

...has 11+ wins, they probably won't make the playoff most years. The only reason we got two in this year is because the SEC was waaaaaaaay down. If they and the B1X have normal seasons, the ACC (and B12) will each only get one into the playoff.

ways to produce games that would bring amazing viewership, and games the "national" fans would tune into. If the P2 does indeed flex their muscle more tan they already have, and limits playoff participation to the absolute minimum to avoid anti trust, then all of college football not in the "P2" should not be afraid to try new, and unique ways to engage the fans. The Sankey's of the world and ESPN's of the world have played their cards.
Not all of the cards have been played in my opinion, and not all of the money is locked up. NIL, players being paid, and the transfer portal will create more parity in my opinion, not less.
It may be time to dissolve the conferences, and schedule the games that garner interest of the viewing public, and stop this madness.

Out of the ACCCG.
Nothing to gain in playing in the ACCCG for an ACC team ranked in the top 8 at the end of year.
The 2 vs 3 format makes sense if the ACC has 2 guaranteed CFP slots. Then it is definitely win and in.

remember posters saying including me, end the Conference Championship games and replace them with week 0 lost rivalry games. Make the regular season even more important again, and expand the playoff to 16 with no byes.

I can’t believe they would publicly share a 2v3 “champ” game concept. That is profoundly stupid.
The top 4 playing is closer to what is needed, but that type of wild card concept works better with a large group of A level or B level brands. The ACC is full of B C and D brands. The media value is what matters most.
This conference is getting sadder every year.

PS I’m hearing the P2 are the main ones that don’t want to end them because their teams aren’t knocked out by them, and they make so much money from them.

because they make so much money and the team that lost still gets in. I hope they go away and bring back lost rivalry games for week 0 to replace the money. However, the P2 Commissioners in particular right now are saying they want them. I could see the ACC, B12 and G6 eliminating them. That’s in essence what Jim Phillips is proposing for the ACC.

So much goes into putting on a football game, and so much recovery is needed after the game, that if the playoff is becoming the end all, be all of the football season, there’s just no sense in conference title games.
Unless they are made part of the playoff, like the NFL, which they absolutely will not in college. College football has an identity crisis. It can’t figure out if it wants to be the NFL or be what it always was. I think the worst thing it can do is try to settle in some middle ground like where it finds itself now.

Behind the scenes, he knows that they had Big 12 boxed in with one bid, ACC AGAIN "slimmed' by with 2 bids. SMU and clemson. The narrative is going to be that SMU wasn't competitive and only clemson 'branding' wise was deserved. I can bet (behind the scenes in College football championship) if they had Miami as the other ACC team, we wouldn't have this discussion.
also, it appears that ACC trying anyway to leverage a money revenue stream. (perhaps the tourney is a way that ESPN gives more money in February contract. hmmm

(including the Pac-12) and not all of the FBS conference, then it will be a violation of antitrust laws. The reason the current format does not violate antitrust laws is because the 4 automatic bids are not tied to specific conferences.

Just like now, they would say the top 2 conferences will get 4 bids, and the 3rd and 4th conferences will get two bids. The top 2 conference champions will get byes, etc.

That is based on the rankings of individual teams. Your suggestion would require them to start ranking conferences. And then they would have to justify why the fourth place team in a higher ranked conference deserves to get in over the conference champion of a lower ranked conference. That might be hard to defend in court.

If they are not confident that they would bethe Top 2 leagues, they shouldn't request the fixed number of bids.
But they will find a way to circumvent the antitrust laws one way or another.

mean they will get away with it. Sometimes people think they get away with breaking the law for whatever reason. Sometimes they get away with it and sometimes they get caught. It is possible the P2s used their four automatic bid proposal as a starting point for a conversation. The same could be true for the other proposal on the table. WRT whether they think their proposal would be challenged in court or not, it is possible they are willing to take the risk. If it is challenged in court and the courts rule it violates antitrust laws, then they really haven't lost anything. They will get to keep cashing those larger checks until the lawsuit makes its way up to SCOTUS.

is probably his destiny next year. So why not throw up a Hail Mary? The P2 won’t support him because their CCG teams will still make it, and they make gobs of money off the CCG. Phillips needs the B12 and G6 to follow him, and they might. They are in a similar position.

Why wait until now?
Most of the possible answers point back to conservative risk adverse people. Whether those people are the ACC staff, the school presidents, the power brokers behind the scenes, or some combination I don’t know. But clearly the ACC as a whole has completely misplayed Their strategy for athletics over the past 10 years.

My educated guess is he is trying to save his job by getting as many ACC teams in the playoff as possible. The ACC was lucky to get two, but Penn State handling SMU was bad for the next playoff selection. So this absurd proposal is likely to try to kill CCG’s and expand to 16. That way the CCG will not play you out of the playoff. However, you have to make up the money for the CCG. Do that by doing week 0 rivalry games. There will be more games, and therefore more money. Oklahoma Nebraska, Virginia Tech West Virginia, Kansas Missouri, UVA UMd and maybe even move games like Florida Florida State, so Thanksgiving weekend is a Conference Game that could have an effect on the playoff, like Alabama Auburn and Michigan and Ohio State. In other words, rivalry games inside the conference.
