A potential problem with this scenario is that you are sacrificing rivalry
games and forcing schools to exchange them for "forced rivalries." For example, NC State has a rivalry with UNC, Wake, and Clemson (aka the Textile Bowl). While GT has a rivalry with Clemson and VT (aka the TechMo Bowl). So why do some schools get to keep their top 2 rivalries and other schools only get to keep 1 or none?
Also, by having an odd number of members that means every week 1 member will be forced to have a bye week or schedule an OOC game (if allowed). This is an important factor because it is possible that a team scheduled to compete in the conference playoffs could have a bye the final week of the regular season and the remaining playoff teams forced to play a conference game. Does a bye the week before the start of the playoffs give a team a competitive advantage? All the FBS conferences seem to think so because currently you don't see any team with a bye week on the final week of the regular season.
