I will address your concerns one at a time

A) "If VT ended up being relegated at the end of the season, then you would be okay with the fact that you didn't have an opportunity to see VT play the away opponents at home before being relegated?"

Absolutely no problem with it. I don't know if you realize how fully loaded the schedule would be. Let me give you an example. Let's say VT is in the Top Eastern Tier with these other 12 teams:

Michigan
Penn State
Ohio State
Tennessee
Alabama
Georgia
Florida
Auburn
Clemson
Florida State
South Carolina
Notre Dame

Now let's say Florida State and South Carolina get relegated. And they are replaced by newly promoted Michigan State and North Carolina. Does that dramatically change the schedule? No. Also, to one of your earlier points about balance in the schedule. You could take these 12 teams and break them down any way you want--or randomly--home and away. It will be an awesome and relatively balance schedule no matter how you slice it.

B) "Even if VT didn't get relegated, there is no guarantee that VT would play this year's away schedule at home next season"

Yes, there would be. A promoted team would simply pick up the following year's schedule of a relegated team. So, if VT is not relegated the flipped schedule for the following year stays in tact. In the example above, North Carolina would just take over the schedule of South Carolina.

C) "This issue is why a every European league has their schedule structured so they play every other team in the league home and away"

In this regard, we can't compare the two. Professional soccer lasts about 9 months. And they can play multiple games in a week. College football can't do this. So College Football would have three choices:
(1) Play home and home each year with fewer teams in the elite tier. This is less desirable IMO
(2) Do relegation and promotion every OTHER year. This is less desirable IMO
(3) Do relegation and promotion EVERY year even if you don't see every team home and home. While imperfect, this is far better than the other two IMO.

I see your point. I just don't think it outweighs the upside of the opposing view.

Bottom line: be good enough not to get relegated. 4-8 would definitely be good enough.
