I agree Lane is an asset for VT. At the same time, VT's largest VA alumni are located in NOVA/DMV and the 757. If I had to rank the largest VA alumni base, then I would guess the order is as follows: 1. NOVA/DMV 2. 757 (aka Tidewater) 3. Roanoke/New River Valley (which includes Blacksburg) 4. Richmond Note: 3 and 4 have been known to flip flop from time to time. Given that it can take people from the 2 largest alumni base 5-7 hours (depending on traffic) to drive to VT to attend a home football game, they may not be able to commit an entire day to attend a VT home football game because they may have other things (i.e. their kid's youth game in the morning) going on that day. Plus, the cost involved can get very expensive if they opt to get a hotel/motel room with a 2 night minimum. These are things even before the quality of the opponent factors into the equation. If VT is noticing that fewer people from NOVA/DMV are purchasing season tickets because of the factors I mention, then Lane's value to VT becomes a moot point. A way to keep the NOVA/DMV alumni engaged (and more importantly donating to the Hokie Club) is to play a football game somewhere in the DMV (or Baltimore) where the drive is a lot closer for them than driving to Blacksburg. The same concept applies to basketball for the NOVA/DMV and 757 groups.
