ND told the ACC from before 2003 that football would never join
Why would anyone have "hoped" ND football would join in the face of these point blank repeated comments by ND?
I think that the Tobacco Road brass thought that they were smarter than ND and could "force" or "checkmate" ND football to join some day once it got its other sports in the conference.
That was never going to happen. ND was clear and upfront always about that.
Basketball is considered a "minor sport" at ND, just like baseball, soccer, lacrosse and hockey.
Football is a totally different animal and really the only thing that ND puts a lot of money into.
Don't believe me? ND will not build a non-football facility using its athletics revenues. If a donor will pony up the money, it will get built. If not, it won't.
So, finding a home for its minor sports is not at all the same as the status of ND football.
One does not lead to the other. See ND and the Big East 1995-2012.
