I am going to give you a conspiracy theory thing., especially the SEC.

For years UNC was all out trying not to have to compete with VT on anywhere near an equal basis. The Bill Dooley UNC teams had a significant number of Virginians in their 2 deep and both because of their being the closest to 757 and with all the Virginians, they felt that 757, the Southside and Richmond just naturally belonged to them. Taking UVA with them pretty well insures that VT won't go and that will allow UNC to be THE team for 757, Richmond and the Southside. Leaving will also allow Tenn to take over the southwest. So all they really need from UVA is to provide a physical presence to take their existing name teams into the DMV market.
