They could also go to the B12 for a larger payout, and remain independent.

A lot of fans in the ACC seem to have a disdain for ND, but I think it is because ND could have/can step up, become a full member, and save the conference - and ND want's nothing to do with it. I would bet that even the ones on this board that do not like the set up with ND, will not give up their tickets when ND visits LANE, or will go to South Bend to support the Hokies. If you look at the contract ND got for their home games, the games the ACC get on their schedule have enough value to make the arrangement worth it, but it's not enough to put the ACC close to the P2. Those that write that the B12 can have them are making a mistake. I will say however, the Big East is a better spot for them, but money talks.
