Simple, the conferences wanted more money
The teams that were in the conference only deliver a flat line on market share and branding. THe media rights folks look at what 'teams/conferences driver the best market and media share for their revenue (and i.e. amount they pay out for rights. WHen conferences (as driven by the members) want more money, they have to find new ways to generate revenue. Existing portfolios dont really increase the needle versus (ie. a Texas or Oklahoma) or USC to the Big 10.
ACC had to grab the best they could that hit the brand and marketshare.
Also for the Group of 5, not one delivers the power to change a value of the conference, (not potential but guaranteed)

If the 9th SEC game is worth $5M per team, why don't we do it?
