10 conference games when the ACC had 14 member was probably the sweet
spot because you could ensure a player would get to play every other team home and away at least 1 time before his 4 years of eligibility was up. Also, everyone would know which 3 teams were in each of the 2 rotating cross-division groups. Plus, if the ACC was "smart" in how it came up with the 2 rotating cross-division groups, then they could divide up states (or regions) with 2 schools so each group got 1 team. For the Atlantic Division teams, it would have meant placing VT and UVA, Duke and UNC, and GT and Miami in different groups (if possible). For the Coastal Division teams, it would have meant placing BC and Syracuse, NC State and Wake, and Clemson and FSU in different groups (if possible). Where the formula could get messed up is if 1 of those schools was designated the protected cross-division game. I would have also been the perfect opportunity for VT to switch divisions with either BC or Syracuse.

If the 9th SEC game is worth $5M per team, why don't we do it?
