I disagree with your stated reason.

Instead I would say their business acumen was fine but the way they wanted to achieve is was essentially to make teams in the ACC better rather than add better teams to the conference. Miami wanted BC over VT because, well VT beat them too much in the BE. UNC wanted BC because BC did not create another school on equal footing that could not only beat them on the field but also take recruits from 757.
