It isn't coincidental that the EPL intentionally did it that way when you
factor in that each EPL club doesn't offer the same value in terms of gate revenue and fan appeal. I can guarantee that every EPL club will tell you that Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, and even Everton are more valuable than Luton Town, Brentford, Burnley, Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion, or Nottingham Forest. The same is true for college athletics. If you were AD at VT, then which group would you want for your home schedule?
Group A: Clemson, FSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Texas
Group B: Wake, BC, Indiana, Oregon State, Minnesota, and SMU
I can guarantee you that an overwhelming majority of the ADs, maybe even close to 100%, would prefer Group A to be their home schedule because it is a more appealing to major of the fan bases. The more appealing an opponent is to a fan base, then the better the opportunity to generate more money from the home game. Also, I can guarantee you that majority of the ADs, who end up with the Group B home schedule, will complain if they are relegated after 1 season because they did not have the opportunity to play the Group A teams at home.

If the P2 don't join it, I say we do it anyway.

The P2 currently has a massive financial advantage they do not want to lose

I doubt anyone in the P2 is proposing this. But I don't hate the idea.

Even the G5 group would be interesting, given the pro/rel scheme.

Interesting concept. Not sure I get why there would be just 1 division

You don't need a home and home schedule to do relegation and promotion.

You are missing the point since the 8th division would be the only division
