Arkansas had only ever played LSU & Ole Miss to any extent before they entered the SEC. Just several bowl games with most of those other eight SEC teams. I don't think Arkansas had ever played Kentucky or South Carolina, before entering the SEC. So you are fundamentally correct. Texas doesn't have much history with anybody in the SEC but Texas A&M & Arkansas. They are bringing Oklahoma with them. Oklahoma has no history with anybody but Missouri & Texas. Those two schools entering the SEC will reestablish several long standing rivalries. However there is an issue of proximity with all those schools. I think that is what Pate is referring to. I doubt Arkansas will be matched yearly with Oklahoma. However you play that game every year for several decades with Arkansas at least winning a few games. That would be a fierce rivalry. I think those ACC schools that Pate mentioned playing nearby SEC schools over a few decades would also create huge rivalries. The SEC bringing in Kansas & Oklahoma State would put Kansas/Missouri & Bedlam Series within the SEC. However is that ever going to be worth a possibly $100 Million share to the SEC? You go back to different outcomes in the summer of 1990. You put Arkansas looking from outside the SEC in 2023. The Hogs would be out of luck just like those schools. Being a once strong program in a low population state would be the epitaph. Virginia Tech does have a large population state to get their foot in the door in the SEC.
