There should be automatic bids for every conference champion.
If the conference is supposedly good enough to be called FBS, then their champion should get an automatic bid in a 16-team playoff. The remaining bids should go to the remaining highest ranked teams. If that means a 50th place team gets in the playoffs and a 10th ranked team doesn't. I have no problem with that. If you're ranked 10th, you have no room to complain about not winning a national championship.
