When I first heard the rumors I didn't think it would ever happen. Then when it really happened and the details of the deal came out I was shocked that UNC had finally decided to go all in on football. I honestly don't know where all the money is going to come from to financially sustain this, but they just seem to be going off the idea that "if you build it, they (5-star players and multi-million dollar donors) will come. I can see this going two ways. Either this will succeed and UNC will start winning conference championships and making it to the playoffs regularly, or it will fail spectacularly and we will still be mediocre in football but with a broke athletic department. This reminds me a little of what SMU did to get into a power conference. With the shifting college football landscape, SMU knew that the time was running out for them to ever become relevant in football, so they swung for the fences and it seems to have paid off for them. I think that the UNC decision makers feel that the window for becoming relevant in football is quickly closing, as the big boys in the SEC and B1G consolidate power, and that it's now or never for UNC to just go for it. And the more I think about it, the more I'm glad they did. I love college basketball (and some of the other sports), but the new reality is that if you aren't relevant in football then you aren't really relevant at all. And if all of this fails spectacularly, at least we can say that we tried and gave it everything we could. As for whether it's good for the ACC, I would say that it's always good when another ACC school finally decides to treat football seriously. If the ACC is going to have a future, more ACC schools are going to have to start taking football more seriously too.
