What is the significance of Gangkhar Puensum?

It is the highest unclimbed mountain (24,836 feet) in the world. It is located on the Bhutan-Tibet border, and climbing has not been allowed on it since 1994. Prior to that, all summiting attempts failed. There are 39 higher mountains, all of which are in Asia and all of which have been climbed.
