today's trivia
Who bought 500 acres at the intersection of Leesburg Pike and Columbia Pike in Northern Virginia in 1837 (You must give more than just a surname to get credit for the correct answer, at least a first initial or something to distinguish him from others with the same surname)?

Hey yo ...
You close enough to get to/be interested in Rochester Red Wings or Syracuse Mets tix? The umpire charity I volunteer for has an online auction, and there are ticket packages for both of those teams if you're interested. We typically work in the MLB markets so the MiLB items can sometimes go without a bid -- meaning cheap tix. Yes, the Red Wings are the local AAA team. I'll have a look at the link
And thanks. I'm not sure if the site has multiple dates available.

I see what you did there. The surname is obvious, but the first name?

An initial or stating his profession is fine.

ding, ding, ding, correct!
Hachaliah Bailey bought the land to use it as a winter encampment for his travelling menagerie. His family later became the Bailey component of the Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey circus. The property was used as winter quarters for the menagerie until 1861. The intersection has been known as Bailey’s Crossroads ever since.

Mind blown on Bailey's Crossroads. Good pull on this question. One my
favorites of recent.

Bailey's Crossroad, I'll be darned.
can't say I ever knew that about the circus, just figured it was one of fhose first families of VA. I mean, I know that Robert was never the owner of Arlington house etc, came down through the wife's side There used to be a "Toys Are Us" there at Bailey's Crossroad as long as I've been alive, As a little kid that was heaven to me. This is back as far as the early 60s. As I mentioned above, I've walked through that intersection at least 100 times. ** Edited by `lag at 4/23/2026, 8:05:21 AM ** Edited by `lag at 4/23/2026, 8:08:54 AM
