ding, ding, ding, correct!
The First Battle of Kernstown (near Winchester) was fought on March 23, 1862. Jackson had thought he was facing a much smaller Union force and retreated once he realized that he had attacked a larger force than he had originally thought. Kernstown is considered to have been a tactical victory for the Union but a strategic defeat as it misled President Lincoln to think that Jackson’s force was larger than it actually was.

Some would credit the victory to Shields more so than Kimball.
