50 years ago today.
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Mich., has the ship's bell and some other artifacts. The National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo has some life preservers from the boat and a big display on the wreck. Highly recommend both places, for those aspects and more.

Highly recommend the Upper Peninsula - probably great in just about any season, but fall was superb. Great hiking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Keewenaw Peninsula was gorgeous (catch a ferry to Isle Royale National Park if you're there in season), Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a gem, and watching the big ships transit the locks at Sault Ste Marie is fascinating. Also made my way down the western shore of the Michigan mitten and there's some great stuff there too. Definitely would not mind going back.

to Sleeping Bear Dunes and hit a couple of other towns on the coast around there. There's a really cool brewery basically in the woods in Suttons Bay--Hoplot. We've not made it to the UP yet, but will soon. It's such a great area.

FPHNCRIP (father of) was the active duty commander of the new Army Reserve Center there. Wonderful town, great skiing (October - April). Have a cousin who retired from raising a family in Detroit (our whole family's birthplace) who's in Elk Rapids.
