Has anyone grown garlic?

Vegitative growth it may freeze and or rot. You want it to start growth when days are getting longer and temps moderating in Feb or March. Then you have to be patient! Long time to maturity.

They say you shouldn't plant grocery store cloves but I have. Sometimes when you leave one in the fridge too long they start to sprout anyway. Plant each individual clove deep enough to where the green shoot is just breaking the surface, or if not sprouted the pointy in is just below the surface. It'll grow. Not sure if you'd get much growth this time of year, but can't hurt to try.

We played polo at Morgan Hill several times and had to drive through Gilroy. It's the garlic capital of the world. As you approach Gilroy, you start to smell the garlic. It's wild. Try play polo in the blazing sun when every breath you talk feels like your head is in a bag of garlic. The huge artichoke farms outside of Monterey are the same. You can smell the artichoke driving through. I love that part of CA.

BTW "polo" is a bastardization of the Hungarian name for ball, which is "pul" . So it's really water ball, which makes sense.

It is the garlic capital of the world. Thought that was the only place it would grow in the US...until recently.

It's really crazy how the whole area smells like garlic. That entire region is amazing agriculture. I have a friend in Salinas, and that's literally the nation's garden. My brother-in-law lived in Modesto, where all the tree nuts come from. I remember the first time I saw one of those tree shakers in a pistachio grove. Having grown up around SW VA dairy farms, it was fascinating to see.
