If it is popular, why is it closing?

Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded.

Old owners wanting to retire.

We had a great BBQ restaurant that closed for that reason.
Parent owners wanted to retire. Kids didn’t want to maintain the business.

Yeah, sadly that seems pretty common.
Heck, that's why the Ukrop's grocery chain (which was a Richmond icon for close to 100 years) shut down about 15 years ago.

restaurants are really tough to sell also. The best ones are almost always
good because the owners are always around. If they're going to be around, they may as well own it. They are the greatest asset, and there's no way to price that. ** Edited by reestuart at 7/28/2025, 4:28:06 PM

Yep. My favorite restaurant in Athens is a jerk chicken place.
The owner is an older Jamaican gentleman. He is a culinary artist. But nobody will be able to replicate that. Once he goes, the restaurant goes I’m afraid.

Why are you calling the owners jerks?

Yeah, we had a really good restaurant in our neighborhood that sold a few
years ago. I think we went once after that. It had gone to crap. I'm not sure they made it a year or so before shutting down.

A restaurant can be popular but be poorly managed and unprofitable.
Or, perhaps ownership is aging and ready to retire and have not found a buyer. Or maybe they have staffing issues. Who knows.

A place we like is closing because of a divorce among the owners
Married French couple, and from the surprisingly transparent email one of them sent out, contentious. ** Edited by WestyHokie at 7/28/2025, 4:54:03 PM

What sorcery is this?!
Do you know any more about what's happening at the restaurant? We were just there for my mom's 80th, bummed to get that midnight email.
