It is the last vestige of New France in or near North America. It appears that it went back and forth between England and France during the 18th and 19th centuries in various treaties. Its population is a little over 6000 people. The last time it was “important” was in World War II, when the (Vichy) French government was collaborating with the Germans. A German airfield there would have been a big threat to the northeastern US.

I think a picture was the Microsoft scenic photo of the day in the last
2 months or so, because I remember seeing the photo and saying to myself "Where is that" and then looking it up and saying "Hmm, I didn't know that France still owned something there."
But I couldn't for the life of me remember the name, for Pete's sake!

Part of my former company had a site outside of Montreal. We’d stay in small hotels in Montreal and were treated fine. I get better treatment in France than in exurb and rural Quebec

Late spring or summer is the time to go when there are festivals almost every weekend. The boutique hotels are down in the Old Town on the St Lawrence. The large ones are near Sherbrooke where the shopping and McGill U are.
When on the company dime and we were entertaining I stayed at Hotel Nelligan in Old Town. Celebs stayed there or near by. Once saw Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett walk through Nelligan when filming Benjamin Button in Old Town

I did a cross country to an air show there when I was in flight school. Really enjoyed that visit!
