That tells me that state owned ABC stores need to close.
Let regular retail establishments start selling booze and get the state out of the equation.

You live in that state, get your legislature to do that. ABC stores can't
just "close" and let retail take over.

The concept of a limited release is as much (if not more) a marketing ploy by the distillers as it is up to the VA ABC. Stores in lesser controlled states have the same issues. Evidently Taters like camping out for fancy bourbon. It's kind of like when college kids used to camp out for basketball tickets, only here the booze is the explicit point instead of just a subplot.

During the early parts of COVID Gov Northam would have daily pressers
And during one he was asked about essential govt services staying open, specifically "why is the ABC store remaining open?” His answer was awesome. Bit of stammering and then something about an emergency plan and "I'll let Brian answer that one." Poor Brian got up and gave an equally useless answer. "well, all functions outlined on our emergency plan are running and the abc store is on that." No explanation of why it's on there, that was it. I just started laughing. Listen, I know it's hard for any politician to be honest about anything but for the love of Erik Estrada on a motorcycle, just be honest about this. "welp, the state makes a ton of money off the abc store and we don't want to lose that. Also, there would probably be a revolt if we cut Virginians off from their liquor." ** Edited by Hurley09 at 12/16/2023, 12:38:23 PM

^Yes, yes, yes^ !!!!!!
State makes a lot of money on this. But being the state, you just know the business is mis-managed. I lived in a state with private stores. Mom & Pop neighborhood people made nice livings. It was business. ABCs have a DMV feel to them which I do admittedly like (no nonsense. Go in, get your booze, and leave). Private stores are waaaaay cheesier. Middle Eastern bazaar meets 7-11 meets Buc-ees. LOL But I bet my bourbon would be $2 cheaper. Competition is the master of all commerce.
