If the ACC believes the only way it can participate in the 12-team playoffs is to secure an automatic bid, then the conference may be willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The ACC's behavior is probably not breaking any state or federal law. Even if the ACC is breaking a law (two), good luck proving it in court. That would make duh U 12-1 and finish in the Top 10, VT would be 10-3 and conference champions... They both get in with that scenario, so wouldn't that make more money for the ACC? I mean we ain't running the table, but if the conspiracies are tru, then 2 in the playoff is the goal, no?

The ACC may think it can't afford to take the chance because it has no control over what happens in the other conferences. Also, the ACC has no control over how many spots the Big Ten and SEC will get among the 7 at-large bids. Depending on where Miami and VT are ranked going into the ACCG, it is entirely possible both teams could end up ranked outside the Top 12 and that assumes the 5 automatic bids are ranked in the Top 12. Heck VT may not be ranked going into the ACCG. For every automatic bid ranked outside the Top 12, then it should reduce the range of candidates for the 7 at-large bid. Miami could very well still be ranked ahead of VT and not be eligible because an automatic bid was ranked outside the Top 12. VT's win may not be enough to leapfrog another conference's champion who may have a better record than VT.
