If the ACC believes the only way it can participate in the 12-team playoffs is to secure an automatic bid, then the conference may be willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The ACC's behavior is probably not breaking any state or federal law. Even if the ACC is breaking a law (two), good luck proving it in court.
