Seems like VT current state is like Beamer’s early situation…
before Dave Braine forced him to make coaching changes… lose all close games, terribly inconsistent and head scratching play calling at times.
Brent should take note or he’s gonna pay the piper down the road…
I wonder where we’d be if Babcock had the brains to hire Bill O’Brian? If we could pay ‘em you’d have guys lining up to coach with that dude!

He seems like he wants to be at VT. Quite different than Fuente. But his in-game coaching, inexperienced coordinators, and exquisite ability to lose all close games is tough to watch.
His ability to retain the talent from last year was really impressive and speaks to his recruiting and leadership — but how long will that be sustainable if we don’t start winning?
I really want him to succeed — but it’s looking dicey.

in your first and third paragraphs. I think the jury might still be out on the second paragraph and true results could be masked, at least to some extent, by NIL allocations. A player is likely inclined to stay or leave as much by the money they now receive as the recruiting and leadership talent of the coach. Moreover, how that NIL gets managed can create a whole host of other dynamics not formerly present. The goings on off the field may be more interesting to watch now than the activity on the field.

player retention but we had a lot of very good players (Drones, Tuten, the WRs, Strong, APR) who could draw a lot on the NIL market. I think it’s fair to say that Pry has also built a culture people like and has articulated a vision people are bought into. But that’ll be a much tougher sell next year if this season tanks, regardless of NIL money.

Criticizing that is just a byproduct of frustration. Everyone is critical of every little thing even when it’s not remotely related to our problems on the field

Personally the 25 and the lunch pail are cool. Both are unique ways to pay tribute to 2 legends of VT football. The issue isn't the the jersey or the lunch pail.

They are cultural symbols meant to convey what is valued. It is a nod to the past — and keeps us tethered to what has made Vt successful in the past.
Obviously Pry needs to do much more to be successful, but the 25 and lunchpail aren’t the issues.

The writing is on the wall. The SEC schools eat their young. The Virginia Tech attitude is to coddle and protect and only do things when it gets to disaster proportions. That or the good ones will leave.

they'll cut their throats by the end of the game, sub them out for a new staff, and keep on trucking. It's a business and they don't hem/haw over it. If they don't make a move, the AD fires the HC. If the AD doesn't make a move, the president fires the AD.

The reality of it is that the kind of coach many want is out of our budget. Even given the budget, are you getting a top tier, experienced coach to come to Blacksburg with an unstable conference situation? Whit's big mistake was not bringing in an experienced head coach from G5. He may have felt burned by Fuente. He certainly should have steered Pry to hire more experienced coordinators. Back to the drawing board soon, though.

If WB is more hands-off Pry's hires, than failure's on Pry not WB. But if the team succeeds, hey WB hired Pry...regardless of why the team succeeds.
Might be a bit much.
I wonder how hands-on he's been with hires by other coaches? If he's consistent, well than at least he's consistent.

I think Whit needs to force Pry to bring in a consultant to advise on upgrading coordinators and overall coaching operation - there are many outstanding options that would consult.
Given Pry’s buyout, VT’s money is much better spent fixing this.

He was happy as ohio st offensive coordinator but he and his family were from boston area. His wife always wanted to go back
In his part of life the boston college challenge fits well..
Dave was a football guy and knew how to talk to another football guy . I dont know if whit has that fundamentals other than a powerpoint presentation.
