+/- interesting stat from last night
Guards - Reichsteiner and Schutt both played 32 minutes. Reichsteiner was -2 and Schutt was -12. Young was 28 min for -6 and Hammond 8 min for -8.
3/4 spots - Johnson - 20 min for -2. Burnham 18 min for - 5. Lawal 31 min for -4
At center - Poteat 23 min for -15. Wessler 8 min and was the only one on the team with a positive point total at +4. I guess the other 9 minutes for the center position was spread around between Lawal and Burnham.
My conclusions
- Hammond coming in for Reichsteiner was not good last night.
- Schutt hit his first shot and it was his only points. He has to score to help this team.
- Poteat's -15 hurts the team last night. He led the team in scoring with 15, but Is he a deficiency on team defense?
- Good job for Wessler in the 8 minutes he played.

Not the most gifted .... but I love his hustle.
I would give him more minutes.

was on the bench. Was he hurt, tired or just in the coaches dog house?

set when getting back on D. Once the press sped up the minds of our guys, it flipped the game. Blown out in the 2nd 1/2 with the exact same tactics that decimated us against PSU. Smart of their coach to wait to spring it on us until after 1/2 so we couldn't do a long recalibration. I know Young hates time outs, but we needed one much earlier in the 2nd 1/2 when we came out so discombobulated against the press.

...handle pressure. Have a feeling we'll learn really fast if that keeps coming at us.

"sped up the minds of our guys" Really hits it here.
They are thinking so much on the floor, they aren't just playing ball. Really feels like they are almost playing to not make a mistake or to make the right play rather than just do whatever the defense is giving them.
Then just the physical ability to deal with the press was poor as well. I still think this team can be decent, but they definitely don't have the ability to be in the top half of the conference.

I'm sure he wants to drill guys in the offense, but if you never even get into the offense that's pointless. Breaking a press like that isn't that hard unless you're completely unprepared for it.
The worry with MY, and we saw this last year, is effective press breaks are almost always meant to create a man advantage in transition. MY's fundamental philosophy is to slow the game down to a crawl and let his efficiency win more than it loses. If you aren't going to take advantage of transition opportunities out of the press all you're doing is effectively increasing your chance of a turnover, giving your offense less time to operate, and tiring out your players without the corresponding extra free looks at the basket you get from the odd man rush.
Talented basketball players want to get out in the open floor, we've seen almost every talented ballhandler leave the program since he joined and personally I believe it's because MY's system is designed for guys who are out-talented to overperform by mitigating the use of superior athleticism, size, and skill. When you get guys who can win playing an AAU/NBA style, you have to adjust to find ways for them to overperform, right now we hamper those kinds of players with how we play.
Guys like Tyler Johson, Jaydon Young, Tobi Lawal, Jaden Schutt, hell even Rechsteiner, are all better playing in transition than in the half court because that's they way they played growing up. You can see it when we break out, we're just plain better pushing the ball up the floor but that runs counter to our philosphy.
It works at UVA because Bennett recruited defense-first guys, when you're recruiting offense-first guys they want to rack up points which is not how we want to play.

just get the ball in the front court, shot layup and dunks against it. They won’t stay in it long if you do that.

AND it comes with some extra turnovers, press all freaking day, there is no reason not to. You’ll be saving energy and getting extra possessions.

He hasn't gotten super athletic guys generally but works them into being guys that perform in his system. Now, there just isn't the guarantee guys will be around that long. Even Coach K adapted for awhile but he didn't have all that much success as things changed around him.

I would much rather set up shop in the corner and get an open look from a kickout because the ball side help defender guarding me had to collapse on a drive than spend 25 seconds every possession running around and setting screens for the same quality of look.
The less effort I exert on offense for the same result, the more I can put into defense.
At Wofford MY never had that aggressive scorer who could get a bucket. He has had them here, especially with Pedulla
