Did someone say that Lynn Kidd got a $500,000 NIL deal at Miami? I read someone on a response mention this. Don't know if it has been documented and is true or not. But, if so, wouldn't it be possible that he told the rest of his teammates and this is the spark that caused all of them to enter the portal? I don't think there is a single NBA-quality player on the team so maybe they are trying to get as much $$ as possible during their college careers. Just a thought.

That was my thought as well
Everyone heard what Kidd (and probably others from other schools) were getting and decided they don't have anything to lose by testing the waters. Some probably think they can come back if they don't get a better offer, but even if not, worst-case they probably land elsewhere for a similar amount as what they are getting now... especially if Tech's BB NIL deals are really that low.

$650k, not $500k.

MAD MONEY!!!
If true and Kidd plays 30 games for UM, that would equate to over $20,000 per game! It is hard to see him being affordable for Tech at that price.

Mad Money
I can't imagine paying a kid who is not that good so much money. And everyone pointing fingers at Coach Young. I know that I wouldn't want his job with all the criticism when there's not much he can do except keep taking the body blows one after another.

Man, I wish someone would have told me, “Go be the best Biology student you
can be…just move to South Beach, and we’ll pay you $650k..”. Done 😩. How can you fault the “Kid(d)?”

If those numbers are true you’re looking at a $4-5M payroll to win big
Without being able to use athletic department revenue, that’s not feasible for us. Basketball IMO is significantly harder because there’s a lot more competition for players, so the bidding gets higher and higher, you’re looking at $1M+ for an all-conference type performer. It’s much easier to retain football players because they have a smaller impact on results and are thus worth less money. If a top WR costs $500k you can get 70% of his production for maybe $100k. An RJ Davis type player in basketball is probably worth 5-7 VT football starters or premier backups. There are also only so many schools with the willingness and infrastructure to support football. VT is one of those. On the basketball side the approach should be get a coaches coach and be a feeder program until legislation comes down on NIL. Go for guys who are overlooked and see what you can build.

Yeah. We are going to have to do something like Moneyball the movie
Except I don’t even think we have a comparable payroll to the A’s in that movie. But we have to do something unorthodox /against the grain/ analytical I don’t know what that is. Maybe we recruit all international players. Or just senior transfer portals from the lower level. Idk.
