Rech and Young have some upside and could be valuable, especially with Young's ability to score down the stretch. Hopefully they take another step forward next year. But that doesn't mean you don't bring in the pieces you need to compete.

Sorry, inability to inbound the basketball, scoring 0 points in a 2nd OT until there was like 1:43 left on the clock. NIL doesn't fix that. Greenberg kept saying we had to have better facilities. Eventually he got them because Weaver was a facilities guy. But the better facilities didn't make SG a better coach. There are many teams making the dance this year who have less NIL money than VT. One of them MY used to coach at. As Barney Fife would say, put that in your smipe and poke it.

and literally the examples you point out from today are 100% tied to ability and thus NIL. The better players are more athletic and able to get open for an inbound pass and scoring the basketball is about ability. We lack both. MY can't will the ball in the basket with coaching. Is he Coach K, absolutely not, but those guys are few and far between. If he starts to underachieve with some talent then maybe you have a point but right now that isn't the case. The game is different than 3 years ago. If he is unwilling or unable to adapt to the new NIL world I agree it is time to move on but there is no evidence of that yet. He is effectively the trying to compete against the Yankees with the Rays payroll. Wofford making the tournament 5 years after Young left is about as relevant to the argument as the fact UNCW is in the tournament. Wofford is in because they won a conference that also has very little NIL money.

But men's BB? Terrible. And they have tons of NIL money. The air hissing sound is the reasoning behind your post deflating. NIL does not make better coaching. It may make for better players (although there are plenty of schools doling out decent NIL $ for players who don't necessarily pan out to being worth the $) but they still have to get coaching. Do you ever read his post game interviews? How many times does he say "that's on me"?

Nothing you have pointed out points to Mike Young not being able to coach. Are there better guys out there maybe, but name 2 who would be realistic choices that would be a near guaranteed step up from Mike Young and fit what we can afford to pay. I don't really care about coach speak in post game interviews. They are 10 minutes after a game where emotions are running high and when you lose you don't really want to be there to begin with. I have seen Mike Young take accountability plenty of times. Don't take any of this as me being a MY homer. It makes him a coach over better players, perhaps. Check his career stats. He was a .551 coach at Wofford (299-244) and he is a .553 coach at VT (105-85). What a surprise! There is absolutely nothing to indicate this will change. Just getting the NIL $ doesn't make that happen. The $ has to be awarded to the right players. And not just the best players but the ones that will work best under his coaching methods. Yeah, if VT had Cooper Flagg we would be a better team. Would we be as good as Duke? No. If we had every player Duke has would we be as good as Duke? I think not. I don't want MY fired. He is not going to get fired. The main thing he has going or him is how badly he wants to be at VT. I'm in reality. Whit knows the best he can do is hire a transitory coach (Brent Williams) who won't stay. .553 or .551 winning %, that is the reality.
