It's called entertainment...

You can take a step back and say, "Why should I give a crap about watching college kids bounce a ball on the ground and toss it through a bucket". Well, cause it's entertaining to some people. We all find different things interesting. We should appreciate the diversity of interests and perspectives. You can easily find plenty of articles that are about the game itself, and if you don't like certain types of non-standard articles, you can skip it and find your entertainment elsewhere.
