My dad's sports-writer friend used to do something similar.

During the Tour de France (don't remember if it was a one-off or annual thing), he'd hop on a bike and sample all the fries in town to find the best, from local spots to the big chains. At the end of the Tour, he'd write it all up in a piece called the Tour de French Fry. It was glorious.
