VT didn't pull $20 million out of thin air...

These schools aren't going to pull 6+ million out of thin air either. For one, because they don't have football, these schools tend to sell out every game and sell more merchandise, concessions, etc. than a football school does. But also, despite what athletic departments might claim, none of them are destitute. They will simply put to death the facilities arms race of the 2000s and move that money straight to athletes. A $6 million estimate is 30% the revenue of what football schools are capped at. That means a football school would need to allocate 30% of its rev share to basketball just to stay competitive. To use a very specific example, in the most recent data I could find, Gonzaga's sports programs made $43 million in revenue and had $33 million in expenses. They don't even have to allocate that full $10 million in profit to blow all football schools out of the water. No football school is doing a 50/50 split of its whole rev share
