I'll argue my small market Orioles, although beginning with the Dodgers already on 3rd base, still have a significantly better shot, albeit relatively slim, then a VT vs the heavyweights. At least in MLB good decisions in scouting resourcing and locking up key players for long term contracts can mitigate some of the financial disadvantage. Id compare that to Beamer during his peak just outsmarting everyone and being able to catch the lightning in the bottle. I guess some could counterargue that i look at Indiana football. Reasonable point but not exactly the same. Anyway I dont expect VT basketball to ever have an equal chance with Duke UNC Kentucky Kansas etc......just "a" chance. And i feel the Os do have "a" chance and the VTs of the world dont.
