Posting History (262)

Was not a fan of the play before the FG...

I would have run Henry to the right on that play - I figure he gains roughly 3 yards and it is now a 39 yard FG. However, the kicker would have still missed but 39 seems a lot easier than 44. I know Henry has occasionally fumbled, but I would take that risk instead of losing 2 yards.

I didn't mind Dan O critiquing games after the fact...

But he must be getting paid per word...everything I look back at the game, he is talking.

I am surprised on UGA's last 3rd down...

I told my wife the last thing the UGA coaches should have told the QB was not to throw the ball away or force anything. Maybe throw a short pass and have the receiver try to run it in. If he doesn't make it, you still kick the FG, but Ole Miss has at most 15 sec to drive for a FG, not almost a minute.

The problem with Gus is...

He is yelling excitement after a 5 yard pass 5 minutes in the game. It would be something if it was a slow build and then the real excitement shows up at the end of the game, but with him it is not the case.

Still have the longest FG block return in bowl games (80)

Antonio Banks in the '93 Independence Bowl - it was nice for Indiana to plead their case to have time added back on to kick the FG before-hand. VT also gets on their along w/ Tulsa w/ most combined points in a 1st half (76: 45-31) - Beamer's last game.

Looking at the overall ACC schedule, does UVA get some blame for our 2026?

UVA and NC State's Brazil game was supposed to be out of conference. The ACC office frowned upon these OOC match-ups within the conference. Thus, the ACC office takes the easy way out and just switches that to a conference game. If they didn't, maybe NC ST @ SMU gets added (NC St has no Cal trip and the ACC wouldn't look at OOC travel). Stanford @ UVA gets added, and then Syracuse comes to VT.

I would have been fine if they had thrown in FSU

That way, it would help get more eyes on our team. The current problem with SMU is that they have a good football team, but they don't get enough eyeballs, and I feel that if you beat them, you wouldn't get enough credit at this time. A win over FSU (2025 version at least) would still draw maybe more eyeballs even though we wouldn't be playing quite as talented of a team.

I feel like the ACC was challenged

Some one challenged them to make the tie-breaker situation either go away for now or make it look not quite like the ACC ACC'd it... Challenge accepted with this roll out of the 2026 schedule.

Forgot to mention

I would have thought since our OOC Power 4 opponent (Maryland) was on the road that you would add a home game instead of an away game...

I think the ACC/Big 12 tie-breakers are more of a smart move...

I think it is a round-about way to increase your chances of getting more than one team. If you went off ratings like the Mountain West, you would have had Miami and Virginia - the winner goes and the loser stays home. If UVA beats Duke, you probably get 2 ACC teams in when the ACC had a pretty down year. It doesn't matter about SEC and B10 with their tie-breakers since multiple teams will easily get in at this time from both. The ratings tie-breakers work best with the G6 (like Mountain West) since if they can get their two best teams, that will help whoever wins SOS.

My opinions about the post-season

No need to release early versions of the CFP. That committee ends up painting a picture they don't need to before the last ones. I know people are complaining about tie-breakers and JMU/Tulane...guess what, the rules were already set. They have had to kick the can down the road on deciding the rules in the near future. Also, there is no difference between this and the men's tourney...it just sticks out more when 1/6 of the play-offs are only in because of conference champions. I do agree that there should be a minimum ranking when including conference championship (if staying at t12 teams, maybe top 20 or top 16. In all honesty, I would rather use the BCS and use a committee vote for the human aspect even if they push it to 24 teams.

Not important this time...

Just a few things I am wondering... How influential will Franklin be in changing/affecting our future scheduling over the next couple of years? I know some of these match-ups have been made for a while - but does he get input on who he would like to face as his 1st opponent? Does he want to keep a VMI as his opener and trade out a JMU when the ACC adds the 9th game (of course, even if VT is the one to only have 8 games, they would still need to add another power 4 opponent), or since it is in his contract for viewership make sure he gets a big-time opener for more eyeballs. Does he get involved with Nike to help with that contract as well as any design changes? Does Franklin get more notoriety as James Franklin, the Virginia Tech head coach, or Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin (more of is VT known more for VT or just the school Franklin went to)?

UVA is actually helping us being good...

Raises our viewership even in a down year being on ESPN at night.

Do you see him at UConn or N Texas? Or does he get a higher gig?

Or does he find a coordinator position at a P4? Or could he be a fill in at somewhere like GT or Lville in case those coaches bounce?

Pretty baller move by VT btw...

VT manages to still make the football talk about VT in the area instead of UVA who is having one of their best seasons in a long time.

The differences between previous head coaching hire press conferences..

The previous ones had the "Gosh, I am lucky that I landed this job at VT." And the mindset of Hokie fans at the time was yes - you are lucky to be here, and we hope you can lead us further than before. Today, it seemed to be, "You are lucky to have me - I will work with you and get you back up and running, but I am in charge." And the mindset of Hokie fans are, "Thank you."

The real question is...

What is Franklin's 1st game as VT's HC? I am thinking VMI comes off w/ a 9-game ACC schedule.

ABC will probably be the last ones to be added

Saw video stating that may be the case, but should be back within 24 hours (probably sooner than that).

I know this won't happen, but....

Just a note - none of this happens, but just playing message board what-if... If Michigan and USC don't agree to the $2.4B investment and don't sign the new GOR, could Michigan and USC decide on the ACC? They could go independent in FB and put their other sports in the ACC, but if they put all sports, the ACC would be 19/20 teams. Does ND come full on board to the ACC and the ACC gets more $$$ for TV? They would be at 20, USC would have built-in traveling partners...maybe they get a few top Big XII schools and go 24. The question is - how much $$$ would Michigan, USC, and ND football add to ACC TV deals? It won't happen, but how much value would that be?

The best place to buy them we have found...

Is Total Wine (price-wise). They have an entire aisle plus endcaps. Though in certain states, if they sell liquor, they can't carry THC, but if they do beer and wine, they can sell it.

Not drinking every day...

But usually on weekends, instead if drinking alcohol, we may start with a gummy and have a couple of THC seltzers on a Saturday. You get a somewhat "high" and no hangover. California sober is not really drinking alcohol, but ingesting THC instead.

The Lounge 8 mo ago

One additional

This would go into affect a year after the bill could be signed so those industries could battle the US government before then.

The Lounge 8 mo ago

So living in NC...

My wife and I have gone more "California sober" with drinking THC seltzers and taking gummies with an occasional alcoholic drink here and there (not a fan of smoking it). We enjoy that way more than drinking throughout the day. It sounds like that could possibly stop once the government opens back up (if it does)...apparently there is something in there reversing/adjusting the provision in the 2018 Farm Bill which allowed companies to produce these items (hemp-derived). If so, I hope NC adjusts the state laws to allow - actually enjoy that better than drinking alcohol, though I still enjoy a good bourbon/rye drink. Not meant to be political, just a "not-so-fun" fact.

Question about Chesney

If he were to come to VT, does he bring a decent amount of his players from JMU like Cignetti? I just did a brief scan of the JMU roster - decent amount of JRs and SRs. If he does, are those players upgrades based on talent, based on knowledge of Chesney's play-style, or not an upgrade?

Why is clock management so hard?

Even in the NFL (looking at you Philly). I was fine having the O out there, but I would have tried to draw offsides again, take the delay, punt and GB has the ball around the 10 with 25 sec left. I will say that play looked like they drew it up to draw PI. We have seen the London struggles...and then my 1st question about Pry happened in his 1st game with clock management.

This announcer went to the Gus Johnson school of announcing

Not exact quotes, but I feel like some would be: He MADE a 2-HANDED PASS!!! 2 STRAIGHT FREE THROWS!!! And then when an awesome play happens, he is busy in story-mode and doesn't interrupt until story is finished.

For Chesney, we could have a small problem...

If JMU sneaks into the play-offs, then Chesney is not available until almost Christmas (unless he pulls out since JMU would likely be knocked out the 1st round).

Are there two possibilities why an announcement has not been made?

Could the government shutdown be a cause of not announcing anything? You have people struggling due to the shutdown, but then those same people see a state-run university pay someone 8 figures (more of an optics issue). Could Franklin also enjoy free reign on seeing what current players/coaches would be willing to come to VT (or another school)? Once he signs, he loses that freedom of being able to contact them. Honestly, I believe it's Sexton building up how much Franklin can be paid so then he can go and get his other coaches that he works for increased salaries/contracts. If I had a guess, they have gotten to a number that VT isn't comfortable with, but is within let's say a million/year and are trying to hold fast while Franklin stays curious on all of his other possibilities. I would think if he comes to VT, he would probably want to sign in mid-November to truly find out about current VT players/coaches to see who he wants to keep and what he needs to focus on before HS recruiting and possible transfers in January (yes, it is January now but those decisions are probably being made in December).

I wonder if the hiring committee...

...has saved a little money to include Jerry Kill on the staff as an assistant to the head coach.

It could happen tomorrow...

But doing it hours before the 1st rankings by the play-off committee would get people talking - unless VT officials want ESPN to get back on YTTV before they say anything about it......

Thinking process of hiring coaches

Do you want VT to already hire their coach? I would not - the main reason is why would we take a coach who wants to sign right now while more and more P2/P4 opens up? I would want a coach that has weighed their options and ended here - thus, some candidates will be turned down from P2 schools, but every available coach would not sign the dotted line right now - maybe last year, but not this year with more and more openings popping up. I am not sure having the opening in September is as advantageous for Virginia Tech or not - maybe at least get the ball rolling to talk to candidates as they come available, but you could also get lost in the mix while so many openings pop up.

Note between Franklin and Beamer

People have been mentioning Franklin not winning the big games - here was Beamer's record vs top 10: 8-33 The 8 wins: 1989 #9 WVU 1995 #9 Texas 2003 #2 Miami 2004 #6 WVU 2004 #9 Miami 2006 #10 Clemson 2009 #9 Miami 2014 #8 Ohio St. Beamer liked playing #9 ranked teams - 4-0 under him. The question could be is with the extra money, is the BOV/coaching committee trying to spend the money on getting VT back to Beamer's levels of consistent winning, or is the $$$ trying to get to where constant play-off appearances along with a couple of chances at the natty is the goal?
