Must Read Book
If you can get this book it was a great help for me in trying to figure out what I needed to do and be throughout. Helps fill in the gaps of information that you might not catch during appointments and discussions.
Good luck to your wife as she goes through this very difficult time.

Fixsen was National Rank 6th and finished 5th
Many of the pole vaulters did not hit a season best. If Lincoln was at all hurt that explains a lot for him or he just had a bad day which happens.

Our folks peaked just fine, NCAA not the same as ACC - nothing sad about it
DMR ran 10 seconds faster than at ACCs. Men's Pole vaulter set PB and finished much higher than his national seed. Heptathlon guy is battling for points this morning.
Men 400m a blip and that could very well be a lingering issue from ACC meet.
Sometimes not finishing first is not an indictment on the performance of the athlete or that we peaked at the wrong time. NCAA is a different animal than ACC. Our folks are doing just fine.

The leadership has everything to do with it
At lease when talking about program personality. The expectations they set and the people they hire are their responsibility. But your other point is taken, the downhill seemed to start the last couple of Beamer's years and he is a HOF coach.

Fair questions
The first question about the ACC came from a thought that we came in and dominated and then it tailed off for some reason. Was becoming part of the ACC a catalyst for change in personality over time.
As for Sands and Whit, we have failed to replace with coaches that seem to lead with that toughness mindset. My views about sands and Whit are solely around the leadership they have provided in the sports arena, especially our football program
I recognize we all come in with biases, but I do think the leadership in place drives some of the mentality and university expectations for our football program.

What changed the VT Football Personality?
Let's admit it. We are now a soft program with no mental toughness. Was it the move to the ACC in 2004? The hiring of Sands/Whit in 2014? Both?
The Big East days felt tougher and we adjusted our personality to be tougher then others. Once we joined the ACC, it seemed liked that toughness allowed us to be a dominant force against what I believe are softer programs in the ACC. Stats to back it up?
In the 8 years prior to joining the ACC, VT had four seasons of 10+ wins (including 2 with Vick). 4-3 and 5-2 were common in conference records. In the first 8 years we were in the ACC, we had 8 straight 10+ win seasons. Result of the tough personality we had and softness of the ACC? Then I look at the bowl games and clearly we still had that tough mentality even if not winning all the bowl games.
2004 - Sugar and went toe to toe with unbeaten AU
2005 - Gator and beat Big East member Louisville
2006 - CFA and went toe to toe with SEC Georgia
2007 - Orange but lost to best KU team ever
2008 - Orange and beat Big East Cincy
2009 - CFA and beat SEC Tennessee (and Lane Kiffin)
2010 - Orange but got stomped by tougher Stanford team (signs of cracking?)
2011 - Sugar and lost to Michigan (but we know it was a catch)
After that the wheels start to come off. Why? Since 2011, only 1 season of 10 wins. Did we start to act like a soft ACC team? In 2014, Sands and Whit arrive and it is downhill since. Did our mental toughness go away as we tried to be like an ACC university and program?
Did joining the ACC start us down the path that we are on now? And should the blame fall at Sands' and Whit's feet? Or is it just because we stopped the "Stick It In" chant?
Just something you think about after losing to Vandy and Rutgers in the same season.

Congrats, my two boys are at UGA
including a newly moved in freshman to the dorms (that's always a fun move in). Hope you found an affordable apartment. I know some of them are outrageous. I'm located around Roswell, too

Go when there is a Braves game
Stay at the Omni by Truist Park (the Battery) and then UBER/drive places. For me downtown is fine for daytime with the kids but not so much at night. More fun activities away from downtown depending on what your family likes and what the weather is. Visiting the various "towns" like Roswell, Alpharetta, Woodstock, Marietta, Decatur have good food, drink and shopping. If outdoors is more your style then head farther north into the blue ridge direction. Lots of parks, hiking, waterfalls to see.

Odd feeling watching JAX yesterday
Ignoring the better players, their offense looked like the NFL version of VT. Up the middle runs off the RPO. Lots of outside passes. Stagnant in the red zone and no TDs for the day. Biggest difference I saw was the use of the pass off the read option. That and the talent.
Since Bowen came from there, maybe that's why it looked so familiar. If he is aiming for that offense, I am not too excited about where we are heading.

Have a 2019 WT (52K miles)
Pretty solid truck, drives well. Good luck finding a reasonable price in the ATL area. Bought in Nov and took us 6 months to track one down. Almost ended up in Alabama for one.

Anyone who thought the game would be different
has not watched us all year. In conference we give up 7-8 runs and we score 7-8 runs. That was not going to change. Our hope is to outscore them, which there are still 3 innings to accomplish that. But we were never going to win 3-2 or even 6-4. Not what our team is.

I could be completely wrong but
With Wake's pitching depth they have 3 top line starters. I could see them pitching any one of them in the pool play game that matters. They can pitch all of their "unneeded" pitchers in the pool play that does not matter. Then line up the other two top line starters on Sat and Sun.
Also, they are already a top seed in the NCAA tourney. The ACC title is important but maybe not at the risk of being ready for the NCAA?
Or they just wanted to rest after the weekend series with VT

I don't think it is an issue of low end football schools
ITo me the problem is the there is a not a strong performing top of the conference. Other than Clemson, no team has been a national player. For ACC to compete, Clemson, FSU, Miami, VT, UNC, GT, NCSt have to be equal to OSU, Mich, MSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Iowa. Nobody cares about Rutgers, IU, NW, ILL, Minn.
Also ACC likely to lost the Duke, Wake type schools to somewhere else, like Big East etc. and then Basketball andthe Olympic sports become a problem for the ACC football schools

I've always thought of us more like the Chargers...
We have had our one shot at the title, but not back since. We have had a strong enough history of great seasons, but have fallen short on the big stage quite a bit.
The Falcons have had so many bad seasons, really choked the SB away. The only common thread to me is they had Vick.

Interesting, I think that is how GA used to do it but
they seem to check more often now (and always one player from each team at the same time).

Not sure about NCAA but...
In Georgia High School lacrosse there is a random stick check at a break (like timeouts, sometimes goals, etc) but seems to be at the referee discretion (in girls it is mandatory after a goal). I would imagine because the bigger concern for boys is an illegal head that allows a player to hold the ball better when checked. As opposed to women's where a deeper pocket really effects that shot.
It is amazing how different women's and men's lacrosse are. Rules, equipment, strategy, skills. All different.

To me there are three glaring issues
1. Attack the middle of the field. We have had some success when we have done that. Too much throw it wide and see if we can outflank them.
2. Better pass protection. Not sure there is much you can do here, but if you had a bye week, find the creative protection packages that can open up #1
3. Catch the ball. We have little room for error so we have to make the catches - look at the Tampa Bay drops yesterday and their outcome. Not sure what you do, except make sure your best players are on the field the most.
I am not a coach....just wanted to set the expectations.

2004 vs 2021
In 2004 we averaged 30 points per game which ranked 25th
In 2021 we averaged 23 points per game which ranked 97th
Not only have we gotten worse, but others are getting so much better. 30ppg would have ranked 52nd
I think the answer that it is a wholesale failure to keep up, recruit and coach.

Coaches and Philosophies
WVU has a recent history of hiring offensive minded coaches and from the Hal Mumme tree. Rich Rod, Holgerson, Neal Brown. And to a certain extent they have had better QB play.
VT had Beamer for the longest time which we know was conservative in nature. Fuente was supposed to change that but it failed (I would argue due to recruiting). Pry is defensive trained too.
I am curious how the defensive rankings compare. My impression is that VT was stronger defensively (at least prior to the last couple of years).

Any insight on UNC Game Tailgating for Hokies?
What parking lots are Hokies trying to be in. Can't stomach the idea of sitting in parking lot full of Carolina Blue.
