As the ACC still stands around
I was wondering if indeed they were to change things up. What could be best possibles? We all know the make up of ACC is not helpful. Say all you want. Small private schools not helping out football . A Wake or a Duke winning ACC in football is a big time loss. Same can be said for BC. That is right the two years in a row VT beat BC for ACC title was a loss for ACC and yes VT. Matt Ryan or no Matt Ryan. Selfish thinking? Maybe. Most of all this driven by selfishness and greed.
While all those schools do not hurt ACC in other sports. Football is the needed jump. Would it not be possible for those schools to be INDY in football with scheduling agreements vs football ACC schools? Couldn't they still use bowl bids? That is if bowls are around much longer. I know this is farfetched idea. All this just that crazy and farfetched. A VT round robin of:
UVA
State
unc
Clemson
GT
FSU
Ville
Miami
Pitt
That is much more interesting than current model.

I agree that is a better situation for that group than what we currently have (eight or ten team version).
Unfortunately, that sort of breakaway is really hard to do.
The old Big East should have done it, IMO. If they had, they might still be considered a P6 level conference. It could have been the original eight, minus Temple (horrid attendance) and plus UConn (actually pretty good back then). Add in Louisville and UCF (IIRC the two best nearby lower-level teams back then) then that group would have been really appealing.

They would have had a conference with its five private schools, and its first several champions being BC, Wake, and GT. Come 2010, when the next round of expansion was occurring, they would have been begging VT to join for football relevancy. And what if VT had been snatched up by the SEC? ACC pride at that point would still have kept them from adding WVU or Louisville for academic reasons, and as a result Maryland
bolts even earlier for the Big-10 and maybe several other ACC football schools (namely Clemson, FSU, and Miami) decide to join the Big-12.

The ACC should have taken all the schools they wanted from the Big East in
one big move. So dumb to do it incrementally.

Partnering with the PAC, the ACC takes two B12 teams, and the PAC takes six.
Minus their top eight teams, all the B12 TV money would go to us and the PAC. Plus, there would be only four big conferences remaining, with the bottom two being much closer to the top two.
Strategically, this is smarter for the ACC than letting the B12 raid the PAC, leaving us stuck with a huge competitor in our back yard.

ITo me the problem is the there is a not a strong performing top of the conference. Other than Clemson, no team has been a national player. For ACC to compete, Clemson, FSU, Miami, VT, UNC, GT, NCSt have to be equal to OSU, Mich, MSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Iowa. Nobody cares about Rutgers, IU, NW, ILL, Minn.
Also ACC likely to lost the Duke, Wake type schools to somewhere else, like Big East etc. and then Basketball andthe Olympic sports become a problem for the ACC football schools
