Expected 6.5 to advance
With Andy being the .5 in a tossup match. 6 advanced, but no bonus. I would say slightly underachieved, but it's so early in the tournament.

Absolutely stoked with Wolak's win though
That's a huge win and puts him in much better position to make a run. His next opponent was an upset as well and will be winnable.

Achieved but still somewhat disappointing. Wolak had a huge win.
Honestly, I was worried he wasn't going to qualify and he's got a shot to earn some points and even make a final run here. Andy winning was big and sets him up well on the backside. Disappointed that Sam lost but it sounds like he is dealing with something so not too surprising. I hope he can still make some noise in the consi rounds. Mullen was a huge let down as prior to the Pitzer match, I thought he was AA material. And then I wrote the Pitzer match off as an anomaly but he doesn't look like the same wrestler that he was a few weeks ago. Looks weak compared to the competition and he is not wrestling smart at all.

Expectations were six to advance. Achieved but unexpected.
Wasn’t impressed with our lighter weights attacking. Thought Sam was the most aggressive but was unable to finish. Shame he’s hurt. Wolak was MOTR. Jimmy was biggest disappointment. Andy looked solid and was able to wrestle his match. Jordan Williams has looked great. He will give Caleb fits in the quarterfinals. Upper level Hokie section is next to Iowa fans. We will be cheering together during the Smith-Ferrari match.

Williams concerns me too.
Also think Eddie and Connor have very tough matches this round. Optimistic case is 5 advance in champ bracket and 3 in conso bracket. I’d set the o/u at 4 wins in champ bracket and 2 wins in conso bracket though and be tempted to take both unders

Wouldn’t overlook Abas. He is an AA himself and full of big moves.
Every match is an individual grind. No easy outs. Got to earn it. And yes Williams is on fire as well. Caleb needs to keep doing his thing. Ferrari is an athletic freak. He does wrestle close scoring matches - just like Andy. If Andy can keep it ugly - he could pull it out.

can’t overlook anyone but Abas has had nothing for Caleb this year
Maybe he was saving something for NCAAs but it would be shocking

Achieved.
Mullen really only big surprise - but has a chance to damage on the backside. Sam hurts our hearts - put it all on the line, I think with his hand coupled with his historical lack of being able to finish shots does not bode well. I think close wins aren't too uncommon in the first round. If you look around the brackets you really don't see many bonuses. I hope to see the guys that attack open it up more in the second round. It's a long tourney and you have to make weight multiple days...not an easy ask when you're cutting 10+ ** Edited by PalmHokie at 3/20/2025, 5:22:56 PM

I think Mullen’s path is rather bad but we’ll see

His path is brutal to AA.
Maybe it will re-focus him somehow. Just odd. He was in fire, pummeling people then seems to have lost his way. Maybe he thought he was going to handle Pitzer again in ACC Champ because he had just pummeled him. Got sloppy, lost the match and then maybe his confidence. The head injury appears to have had an impact as well. He did he a good opponent who had won 36 matches on the season.
