Wrestle your best guys while they’re on campus
Between injuries and NIL, I think you go with your best always

He’s shown flashes for sure. Would move for him to put it all together
Wins over McNeil (3x AA), Cedeno (ACC champ), Filius Parker (2023 AA), Brandon Cannon and Nic Bouzakis prove he has AA capability. If he can stay healthy, manage weight, and peak in March, I believe he’s got Ventresca level upside

True. NCAA existed by gentlemen’s agreement and only ever held power
Because the institutions it represented agreed to follow the rules. That’s been cast aside, mostly because the more wealthy institutions realized they’d rather gain the advantages that came with paying athletes than potentially deal with rules that promoted a more level playing field, and the NCAA has lost essentially every lawsuit, and any authority ceded by the member institutions, since.

Davis finished 5th but otherwise yeah
2 champs is less than they’ve had recently but 8 wrestlers finishing top 3 is so absurd it’s hard to fathom.

I think he spiked it.
He threw it toward the bench after an earlier match and wondered if it would get a penalty point. Then in a later match he straight up spiked it and that’s what I had assumed got the penalty point.

Feeling a little better since Connor is guaranteed to wrestle to seed
I was hopeful he’d make the semis but that wasn’t to be. Still he bounced back from a disappointing loss and defeated two AAs tonight so hats off to him

Sure I know it can happen. Henson has clubbed some dudes in the last month
And frankly they were far more egregious than what Wolak just did, but Henson was still only given a verbal warning. Also I recall several years ago there was an emphasis on posts landing below the forehead and points were awarded after a warning as well. I even recall a VT wrestler lost a match because of that penatly point, though I can’t remember exactly who it was at the time.
Anyway, I truly don’t believe there is a grand conspiracy against VT. I do think ACC refs are often influenced into stall calls by certain coaches and the home crowd, but it works to our advantage sometimes as well.
This was unlike anything I can ever recall because there were repeated questionable calls and one had to be overturned by independent review.

Not to mention they hit Wolak with another penalty point for illegal hold
Which was reversed and instead ruled a violation by NCSU wrestler after the INDEPENDENT review.

Accidental head contact occurs all the time though
I know you’re a ref and it’s a tough, thankless job. My dad reffed high school football and basketball for years and almost always defends calls as well.
That said, I rewatched it multiple times on replay just now and in all the years I’ve been watching NCAA wrestling, I’ve never seen that call made.

Wolak deserved to lose but that ref SUCKED
Hit Wolak with a penalty point for barely anything. Hit him with a stall point on bottom when Singleton stayed in the same position. Then Singleton literally would not bring his head off the mat, stalled, and fleed for the last minute. Terrible.

Worst call in wrestling imo. Flatten the guy out, grab wrists, and hump him
Stalling on bottom. Stupid.
Wrestling Board

Very confusing because Wolak hasn’t been worked over like this
By pretty much anyone else. KOT scored on him but the constant tilts are bizarre.
Wrestling Board

Wolak has no answers for Singleton.
Not sure exactly what the issue is but it’s clearly a stylistic mismatch.

Chicken sh*t wrestling by Spratley. Hope you get spanked in the finals

I hope you’re right but sometimes wrestling more is better
You get hot, build confidence and tear through the consolation bracket. Lasso last year and Epperly from back in the day reeled off 7 straight after an opening match loss.

Excellent recruiting class coming in but my current guess
125: Eddie
133: Campbell/Seidel
141: Crook
149: Henson
157: Hipolito
165: Church
174: Wright/Burton
184: Stewart/Burton
197: Sasso
HWT: Mullen
I could see some shifting around 141-165. We have solid depth but you let Henson go where he wants and fit everyone else around as best as possible. Obviously transfers change everything so we’ll see what happens.

Considering he’s beaten McNeil twice I’d rather see him again
Going to say again I’m super nervous about this match with Williams though
Wrestling Board

Yes. Spratley has been really good
Eddie has been wrestling great though so let’s go take it and get to the finals.
Wrestling Board

Probably a tough match but
if I’m trying to be optimistic, Connor had about 30 seconds of mat time and his opponent will have already wrestled 2 matches.
Wrestling Board

Nope. credit to Wisconsin coming out super aggressive
Connor has been neutralizing opponents offense but Wisconsin was fast and committed to his shots.

I believe they delay starts for the champ bracket to all start together
And I think the opposite is true for the consi matches, it’s extremely hard to predict match times after 125 starts at noon. I’d guess 15-20 minutes between weights but with SV, TB, and challenges… there will be some long delays.

I thought it was known NCSU was slightly “down” this year
Essentially their entire lineup was competitive but Orine and Scott had down years, they are redshirting Jack and Arrington at those same weights, and they ended up lacking the number of AA caliber guys they’ve had in recent years.
WrestleStat rankings had them as the #11 dual team but #19 tournament team, so I don’t think their performance has been particularly surprising.

Zillion/10/10
But seriously they have all 10 wrestlers alive and in the quarterfinals.
To tack on to the insane dominance, only 1 of the 10 will be a significant underdog (Davis v Byrd at 133) and it’s very possible they end up with 9 semifinalists.

Now is the time! Let it fly and leave it all on the mat
I would agree he’s been tentative offensively since returning from injury but have no insight into the reason. Let’s hope the pressure is off and he opens things up for the rest of the tournament.

Very true. The margin is razor thin in almost all of these matches
I’m trying to temper expectations to some degree because we are higher seeded in 6 of these matches, and I know there will be reactions if we have “upset” losses.
Even in the two matches we are most favored in:
- Williams is more dangerous than the average 8 (recall Mekhi was an 8 when he won his championship).
- I believe Connor is set up well but his style lends itself to tight matches (hoping it’s not as close as the score might indicate).
I want to win them all but it’s going to be nerve wracking and a loss doesn’t mean someone choked either.

By wrestlestat ranks we are favored in 5
Mullen is 1 spot ahead of Feldman and Jimmy had a rough day yesterday.
Smith is 1 spot ahead of McDanel and it will be Andy’s experience versus McDanel’s athleticism.
Hipolito is only a 3 spots above Siebrecht, who is an experienced wrestler that I could see following the blueprint of Chumbley yesterday.
I’d be very happy if 3 guys make the semis and clinch AA this round. Feels like 2 guys staying alive in consolations is realistic, as I think we have with 2 slight favorites (Hipolito, Smith) and 2 slight underdogs (Church, Mullen).
