Several are curious about why he would go from Head Coach at Columbia to being the Assistant at VT. Here are a few thoughts. Of course I could be wrong on any or all of these but.... 1. Contrary to some saying the media is over blowing the problems there...it is not good place to raise a family (for many) and Columbia is in the heart of some policies that are not sustainable. Trying not to get political, I have numerous LE connections there and they say it is as bad or worse than what is depicted across the city. Most of my retired LE friends have moved to Florida, because nyc is a mess. Of course everywhere has problems but Blacksburg is plain and simple non-chaotic, beautiful with a good quality of life and that's a win for most. 2. Maybe he just wants to "coach ball." We've all probably known people of "lesser" rank or position and they simply don't want the hassle of being the main guy. They could and would make great leaders but they would rather not be and choose the lifestyle that is quality to them. Maybe he loves the sport, wants to mainly coach and leave the majority of fund raising and speaking engagements to others. 3. We can't discount that even though he's done well at an institution with possible limited resources or limited attention, he believes Robie and Frayer would be excellent to learn from.
