Elephant in the room: when was the denial of host bid known?
Who knew about it? Just Pete & coaches?
Did the team know? (Makes me wonder about that week of GT/LU losses…had we just found out?? Yes this is obviously speculation)
So many questions…is/was VT arguing/fighting with NCAA over the denial (apparently we thought there was a solution…maybe we had Roanoke hotels but NCAA said outside 30 miles was a no go although inside :45 min)
So many questions @Andy Bitter a reporter should love to ask an administrator in the know as to exactly how it went down. Did the denial give the committee an easy out? Apparently the committee ignored (contrary to earlier statements) DSR & KPI and focused solely on RPI & SoS
I REALLY hope this isn’t the kind of thing that could kill a program’s recruiting and/or attractiveness for our current coaching staff to remain. This is a big deal hurting what COULD be a revenue producing sport (I said revenue, not net profit…don’t get me started on not charging admission or improving TSP).
Hokies LOVE this team and program. They don’t deserve to have to face issues like this if they earn a host slot (whether they did or didn’t this time is irrelevant it’s the lack of administrative support to have a proper contingency that bugs me). I raised this concern a LONG time ago including LAST season

Apparently from what I heard our bid was approved last year ? Same situation. I thought I saw someone post that if we were selected top 16 last year we were eligible to host/bid was ok

And Chip and Nick and David.
Believe me, Sam has been prodding about this the whole time. I'd direct any questions about it toward him.

hosting a regional plus any other events going on in the region at the time? It is my understanding that Roanoke has recently seen a decline in the number of hotels. It may have been that the NCAA Committee wasn't necessarily opposed to the solution, but the solution wouldn't have solved the problem because of the lack of available rooms for the entire window of the Regionals.

repeat: *If VT reserved the rooms ahead of time, instead of trying to do it after the fact.*
This is such a Babcock move: reactionary, unimaginative, can't do.
Pathetic

Graduation hotel reservations are made that far in advance. And many families end up staying an hour or more away.

advance. It's not that hard. Unless you have a "can't do" attitude, in which case it is impossible. We can't do that! When, instead we could easily do it.

30 mile window. If the NCAA said VT could host, but the games would have to be played in Salem, then Roanoke is within that window for Salem. However, if Roanoke only has enough hotels to meet the demand and no other "events" can overlap with any of the Regional dates +/- how many dates leading into the event, then I do understand why the NCAA Committee would think that Roanoke/NRV doesn't have enough hotels to meet the demand.

Sports Complex. USSSA and ASA have also used the facilities in the past.

I would think USA Softball is picky about the facilities it uses for sponsored events.

Within the last year. Think another opened at Hollins exit but that’s even farther out. Exit 137 Salem is definitely within the parameters distance wise. Not sure if the hotels meet requirements for quality/,’conference room space
