Umps aren't supposed to be human but they are. Humans make mistakes

and humans can get caught up in the moment of the game. They can get caught up in the celebrity of the pitcher or the batter. Batters like Ted Williams get the benefit of the doubt, pitchers like Nolan Ryan get the benefit of the doubt and yes there are more recent examples today in MLB and there are those players in softball today who get the benefit of the doubt. If I'm behind the plate with a pitcher like Tincher it's a moment of pride for me, same if I'm behind the plate with McMillan or Peck up to bat. If Chatfield takes pitch, it probably was a ball, she's that good an eye around the plate. Umps shouldn't be giving the benefit of the doubt or having pride in the moment - not supposed to be human - but we are. So it's not weird - that stuff you're talking about happens even in MLB and it has forever.

Briski versus LSU. No 3 ball count until 4th inning. Gets batter anyway.**

Briski and Jordy F are real pleasures to watch if you love good pitching.**

Funny…Bree Carrico & Mazz were real pleasures to watch vs Duke in ACCT

Briski had 4 backward K's I think. They were borderline pitches for sure.
MidloHokie 05/23/26 06:35 AM ET
It’s not just the backward Ks it’s what’s the count

If the P is around the zone, they will get more strikes called.**

Imputed consideration. I remember from my time behind the plate. **

It must be real if it's been given a scientific name. :-)**

It's real. Had to be resisted. Lots of influences - P, C, pitch type...
TomTurkey 05/23/26 01:06 PM ET
I remember. Loved doing it because you had to focus, concentrate, hustle.**

Add ASU's Kinsie Brown to those two. If you're going to wear a mask . . .
MidloHokie 05/22/26 11:14 PM ET
Kinsie Brown is as good as I’ve seen this year.
GCHokieof91 05/23/26 09:55 AM ET

Briski retires the final 21 batters she faces. 11 K's 0 BB. one hitter.**

She’s improved tremendously since last year
