Actually, Mazz was recruited as a hitter

According to news stories, the VT coaches had never seen her pitched when they offered her a scholarship and she accepted. It was only after the fact that they saw her pitch and decided to see if she could do both. I have watched some practices where she has simply blasted the ball. I disagree that we have 15 batters that can hit at her level, but will be the first to agree that doing both is really, really difficult. If she wants to hit and is willing to put in the extra work to do so, then she should be able to hit if she's one of the best nine hitters in the lineup that day. I remember that one of the reasons that Ivy Rosenberry entered the transfer portal was that she wanted to hit. This is a direct quote from a news story about Ivy transferring: "the Cowgirls are going to give Rosenberry a chance to swing the bat as a designated hitter, a scenario that Virginia Tech was hesitant to explore." So perhaps the coaches are more open today to pitchers hitting than in the past. They see the players every day so I trust them to make the right decision on this one.

It's very tough to be an effective P4 pitcher if you can't throw 63+.

Given Tech's need for improved pitching, I would like to see Mazzarone

I don’t think hitting takes that much away from pitcher development
