If we are going to dissect it, let us do so...
Disclaimer: This is only about curious nerdy physics and optics, and not about the umpire's error, as that is to be expected.
1. CORRECT - you are right to call out a single screenshot is misleading, as it doesn't show the path or the depth of the ball. Without a separate overhead angle, we are left to extrapolate in our minds which can cause a visual illusion.
2. CORRECT - you are absolutely right to call out the camera angle. Objects that have yet to pass the plate will appear further to the left than they are, and objects beyond the plate will appear further to the right than they are. This is due to "perspective distortion". The screenshot I provided would exaggerated how outside it was, while I believe your picture would minimize how outside it was, as the ball had not quite reached the plate.
3. CLARIFICATION - the pitcher's motion doesn't cause it to go as much left to right as we would think, because she has a very quirky motion where she starts in the center of the mound, but before she releases she has hopped a few feet to the right side.
CONCLUSION: My picture suggests it is about 17 inches outside, while your picture suggests it is about 7 inches outside. It's somewhere in-between, and my best estimate would be about 10.83245 inches, so I think your picture is more accurate. We can agree it was a terrible call either way.
Go Hokies ;)
