What 2023 woulda looked like with 14 team CFP. 2 Byes. 5 Champs. 9 at-large
If you would project what it would look like AFTER the current round of conference realignment: just flip Texas (treat as "SEC Champ") and Washington (treat as "B1G runner-up"). And treat Arizona as the BigXII Champ. Using last CFP ranking as the measuring stick. 1. Michigan (bye) 9. Mizzou vs. 8. Oregon ----------------------------- 12. Oklahoma 5. FSU 13. Arizona (treat as BigXII Champ) 4. Alabama ----------------------------- 14. Liberty vs. 3. Washington 11. Ole Miss 6. Georgia ---------------------------- 10. Penn State vs. 7. Ohio State 2. Texas (bye) ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 2/22/2024, 1:06:14 AM

11 out of 14 in the P2

Read my posts above B1G & SEC want 4 auto bids each & they can get at large
bids too.

4 out of 4 were P2 this year. But yeah.
To me, I'd like there to be 9 at-large with NO AQs for non champions. But the key will be to get a selection committee that isn't on the take for ESPN. Much easier said than done. ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 2/22/2024, 12:32:02 PM

Read my post above ESPN & USA Today saying B1G & SEC want 4 Auto Bids each.
That doesn’t mean they can’t get more of the at large too.

FSU would’ve had a bye as top 4 ranked Conference Champion. Might want to
edit that. Also, why 14 instead of 12? I don’t see going to 14 or eventually 16 IMHO until the P2 break off and Notre Dame is forced to join a P2 (probably B1G). ** Edited by Stech at 2/22/2024, 8:56:23 AM

I did 14 because it's was discussed at the CFP meetings in Dallas yesterday
12 will be short lived.
S

I missed that, do you have a link?
Maroon Baboon Maroon Baboon OP
Pete Thamel tweeted about it yesterday and again today.
Here is a link to a tweet from today from him. And he links an article by Heather Dinich about it that I haven't read yet. Also, Flugaur was talking about it on his show yesterday.

Thanks, 14 team and revenue sharing mentioned too, I’m guessing Hokie83 was
referencing that.

If they go to 16, and I think they will, it will be
to throw a bone (as 2hhoop3 mentioned in one of his posts) to get all of the other conferences on board with access. In reality, it will open up 2 more at large for the P2, and they could then give 2 bids to either the ACC or B12 - some years. maybe too, the rare 2 invites to the G5. It will be self serving, and the P2 will get an even bigger slice of the pie - all while seeming to be more inclusive, Get rid of the bye's, and reward the top 8 home games. The money for the home teams and the local economies is worth more in dollars than a bye. I can't see the top 4 teams sitting out on potentially one of the best sports money making weekends in American history.

It isn't THAT much money per school, probably $200k to $600k
Depending on how splits are done and who gets one. Per John Ourand Quote yesterday, ESPN values each CFP first round game at $25 mill. Divide that ~70 (current #of P4 schools +ND) or ~40 (Future state after contraction/relgation). Obviously, $$ delivered to a specific school will vary depending on how splits are agreed upon. Each game isn't that much $$, so they are trying for more games. Though supply increase again reduces $$ value of each game. This just sucks.

Question, and i don't have the answer to it - could Lane sell out for a
playoff game, and charge $100 a ticket? (for a playoff game). Do you think OSU, Bama, or any blue blood could charge $100 a ticket for a playoff game, and sell out? That is over $6M for a VT home playoff game that they do not have to share with the league. That is just the ticket sales - add concessions, merchandise, (parking?). It adds up pretty quickly.

Yep. Why wouldn't it?
B

Of course, i didn't really doubt it, but to some programs, that money
and fan experience could be a lot more valuable to an institution than a bye week. (that was my point)

You really think the P2 are worried about the other Conferences? They want
more P2 teams in the playoff. So they can make more money. Everything they have done in the last few years is about them getting more money and a better advantage. Think of them as a Competitive Business that wants to grow, because that’s what they are, Billion Dollar Businesses.
B
Big12 guy
No - they are worried about the cash cow they just
cashed in on. They will want to keep this train rolling. An expanded playoffs get more of their teams into the playoffs, not less. So, ya, I think it is something that will happen.
S
Stech
However you said in the post before they are throwing nonP2 a bone, this is
all about them, not the rest of the conferences. They have the power and money, and if the others don’t listen, they will leave. Everyday I think more and more that’s their end game. I believe you when you say you don’t want that or think that will happen, but at least right now the trend is going the other way.

The bone is to get their vote - nothing more.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying.

I'm a hard NO on 16 unless they get rid of conference title games.
The champions of, let's say, the SEC and the B1G are at a disadvantage. They have to play and do what it takes to win a title game while some teams are sitting home resting. I am also a hard NO on any non-champion AQs. ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 2/22/2024, 11:09:12 AM

Notre Dame is the hold up, every game causes injuries and home games are a
big advantage. The Conference Champion game is the two best teams from a Conference at a neutral site. Notre Dame doesn’t have to play in the toughest in conference game all year at a neutral site, instead because of their name they are likely to be ranked high and play a G5 team at home. That’s far from for instance Texas playing Alabama at a neutral site.

Anyone is free to be an independent
Any school can be a football independent, have the same playoff setup and try to get their own TV contract. The more the merrier.
S
Stech
That’s true, but why haven’t they chose to do that?
2
2hhoop3
Did ND get their own......
contract in the latest or get it with a little help from B1G friends? Nobody in this day and age can really be independent and ND, like most things associated with their football program, is still more riding the coattails of performances 40 or more years ago as opposed to recent accomplishments.

They will go for growing the revenue pie over protecting the conference
champions. A home game in one of the top SEC or BIG universities is worth what to the home team? A regular season home game is worth more than $6M to the athletic department, what could they charge for a playoff game? When you add in the revenue for the local economy, the numbers start to get mind boggling - but lets keep it to the revenue for the athletic department. In addition to the media revenue, for some of the blue bloods, they would get revenue that they do not have to share that approaches maybe $10M. Ya, I think they will go for the home game over the bye.

I am not found of the CCGs to begin with. But I would love for a "FLEX"
schedule that would allow there to do "playoff" games as needed toward the regular season. For example, if Bama, Georgia, Texas, and Ole Miss are all undefeated, let them play a semi-final and final in game 11 and 12.
HokieAl HokieAl
Yeah, CCGs are now a relic of the past and no longer needed
Especially when the conferences are so big and we have the expanded playoff. They just need to shift the money to the playoff and scrap those champ games. Interestingly, some of the champ games have been around for longer than I expected (see link) BIG started in 2011 PAC started in 2011 ACC started in 2005 B12 started in 1996 (stopped in 2010 then started again in 2017) SEC started in 1992 And some interesting results as I look deeper. In 22 B12 champ games, Texas won 4 and OU won 11. In 13 PAC champ games, USC won 1, and UCLA never won. In 19 ACC champ games, it is what you would expect. Clemson 8, FSU 5, VT 3 ** Edited by HokieAl at 2/22/2024, 11:50:46 AM

Damn that 2005 game! Would be VT 4, FSU 4.
Maroon Baboon Maroon Baboon OP
You could argue that the fall of the conference model started with the SEC
adding USCe and Arkansas just to have a money making title game.
B
Big12 guy
That is a decent segue into a different conversation that the ACC
and all other conferences not in the P2 should consider. What if there was a game, say the week before rivalry week, that the top ACC and B12 teams play, based on their current schedule? Like a challenge in basketball. The same for the G5 conferences - pitting the top conference teams against one another. Home game goes to the higher ranked team. That would be content all of us would watch, because the games have playoff implications, but do not alter the conference championship. A way to increase media dollars and content, plus adding strength of schedule for an at large berth. The p2 would not do such a thing, because they already will get the bulk of at large bids, and they already have the media money.
Maroon Baboon Maroon Baboon OP
The B1G and SEC are so big now, I don't know why they even bother playing
OOC games. I'm glad they do, but still.
B
Big12 guy
Not about them, but finding ways to get the eyeballs ourselves.

They'll move to 16 when conference championship games go away
And that happens when 1. TV $ for the 1st round eclipses conference championship $, and 2. when there are just 2 major conferences left.
S
Stech
I’ll just add, number 3, is if Notre Dame joins a Conference, they hold up
going to 16, because they don’t have a Conference Championship game.
