It would only happen because of economic and competitive viability.

The schools staring down oblivion want the ACC to endure for financial and competitive sustainability. Period. This would include Wake Forest and BC and potentially Duke, Pitt, GT and Syracuse. They need the ACC as is to continue, because most or all don't have a better option than the ACC. BUT, it has to work financially for even these schools. The schools not mentioned above would want the ACC to endure if it were able to allow them to finance the level of competitiveness that suits them moving forward. This would be a different amount for, say, NC State or Virginia Tech than it would be for Florida State or Clemson. If the former two schools could add $4-5M to their annual budgets, they'd probably be cool with it. If the latter could add $10-15M to their annual budgets, they'd probably be cool with it. (Because FSU and Clemson HAVE to be looking at reduced shares in the B1G + a massively expensive settlement.) Anybody thinking the way this ends is driven by academics is just not really thinking about things clearly. If you told Duke that Stanford could come to the ACC but they'd lose $5-10M a year moving forward due to decreased media payouts and increased travel expenses, they would not vote for Stanford to come in. Complaining by saying "But, but...academics! Presidents are ruining the ACC with their prestigious academic invites!" is just a bit nonsensical.
