I have lived that as a Hog fan and I don't agree with one angle about conference moving as you laid out. That about playing teams in close proximity is the ideal structure to be sure. However the Hokies would develop rivalries with the schools in the eastern half of the SEC over several decades. Even with Auburn, that is way over on the east side of Alabama near the Georgia line. I know the Razorbacks had South Carolina on the yearly schedule several decades until the Aggies entered in 2012. That South Carolina game got to be enjoyed by Hog fans over all those years. It would be the same way if the Hokies entered the B1G. Maryland is an old ACC foe. Penn State & Rutgers and even Ohio State are relatively close. Virginia Tech would develop rivalries with those B1G schools over a few years. The Hokie fan base would enjoy those games. I don't know what the future holds for college football. The game is radically different from what I remember as a young man. Amateur athletes and everything done for the good of the team. Those concepts have went down the toilet like so many other things that were the better part of this society. College football literally in the end depends on the fans open wallets. Who knows if college football can weather all those drastic changes in the years ahead?
