Assuming WVU became the 15th team, then limiting the protected games

to only 2 make not work because there should be enough members who will want to protect 3 games to kill the vote. Here is a list of those potential schools. Keep in mind the info is based on various sources that have indicated the school's opinion on what is or isn't a rivalry. If the ACC is going to go down this road, then it should treat each school's opinion with the same level of respect. Otherwise, you risk offending members and creating crack in a foundation that may already be fragile.

Clemson: FSU, GT, and NC State (Textile Bowl)
UNC: Duke, NC State, and UVA
Duke: UNC, Wake, and UVA
UVA: Duke, UNC, and VT
VT: UVA, Miami, and WVU Note: VT-L'ville could be a potential rivalry because most older VT fans remember how L'ville treated VT when both were a member of the Metro Conference.
WVU: Pitt, VT, and Syracuse (Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy) Note: WVU-UVA could a rivalry given that the UVA Pep Band made fun of WVU during the halftime show of the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl.
NC State: UNC, Wake, and Clemson
Wake: Duke, NC State, and UNC

Some else to consider is that a school may see this as an opportunity to rekindle a rivalry. For example, Miami may want to renew its rivalry with BC and Syracuse as well as keep its rivalry with FSU and maybe even VT. Even FSU and UVA have a secondary rivalry where the winner of the game receives the Jefferson-Eppes Trophy. BC and Clemson play for a trophy (O'Rourke–McFadden Trophy) and I believe both schools consider it to be a secondary rivalry. I guess it is possible that Clemson could say it would rather continue its "rivalry" with BC instead of its "rivalry" with FSU which really didn't develop until both schools had a Bowden for its HC. It is possible that GT may want to continue its rivalries with Clemson and VT which could become problematic for VT if it already has its 3 protected games. At some point something will have to give and every school may not end up with its Top 3 choices or even Top 2 choices. Then again, it has already been established that it isn't possible for 15 schools to have 3 protected games because the math doesn't work out in the end.

ACC close to eliminating Divisions soon (LINK)**
Stech 02/09/22 12:40 PM ET
They should also go to 9 conference games, but they won't.
Mr. Touchdown 02/11/22 12:15 PM ET
The problem with a 9 conference game schedule is it limits a team's

This means acc got the votes

So who would be #15(16)?**
Millpoint 02/10/22 08:45 AM ET
West Virginia and Navy, 1 for rivalries, the other for location, national
Stech 02/12/22 01:53 AM ET
Espn will tell them
Sunsetunderground 02/10/22 09:14 AM ET
Why would ESPN agree to up 14 member’s pay just to get

Folks too tactical
Mercury 02/13/22 07:21 AM ET
Not just WV
Sunsetunderground 02/11/22 01:59 PM ET
Personally, I'd rather the ACC partner w NBC and along w ND broadcasts,

NBC is out of Major Sports now

It won't be ND

AD Shane Lyons shot down any WVU to ACC speculation in December

I think any Big 12 team would gladly jump to the ACC now.

Come on// this is NOT for any average person discussion and debate

One thing I've constantly heard from our media in Morgantown

VT's AD shot down any ACC talk in 2003 as well.

Millpoint 02/10/22 09:04 PM ET
Hopefully the ACC won't screw this up. Go 3 permanent rivals, rotate others
Maroon Baboon 02/09/22 07:19 PM ET
The pods are simply a scheduling tool for better rotation
Mercury 02/11/22 08:32 AM ET
You realize you will have permanent inequitable schedules FOREVER
Vippie1 02/10/22 11:08 AM ET
No matter how you do it, there will be inequitable schedules**
wwhokie1 02/10/22 01:40 PM ET
Rivalries matter. And they matter more than equitable schedules.
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 01:39 PM ET
Exactly. This issue is just another reason why increasing the size
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 01:49 PM ET
The rivalries matter to the schools and their fans though
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 12:02 PM ET
Yes. ANNUAL rivalries are where it's at.
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 01:47 PM ET
If you feel ACC need 3 built in games every season
Vippie1 02/10/22 03:07 PM ET
No. How is adding two teams going to allow us to play more often?
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 03:18 PM ET
Even if the ACC added 1 team (i.e. WVU) and opted to go with 3 quads/pods
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 03:48 PM ET
Certainly adding teams would complicate matters.
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 04:32 PM ET
Yes, adding teams would complicate matters
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 04:47 PM ET
3 Permanent rivals seems to only work with an even amount of teams.
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 05:40 PM ET
FWIW I did something similar when the MAC had 13 football members
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 06:06 PM ET
14 is actually a good number
obguthr 02/10/22 08:24 PM ET
Assuming WVU became the 15th team, then limiting the protected games
VTHokie2000 02/11/22 02:31 AM ET
I'd be fine with just giving each individual school what it needs
Maroon Baboon 02/11/22 03:15 PM ET
A problem with customizing the number of protected games for each school
VTHokie2000 02/12/22 06:13 AM ET
As long as no team has more than 3 and we play 5 or more additional ACC
Maroon Baboon 02/12/22 10:43 AM ET
I'm a little surprised that you think UNC is the only team that "needs" 3
VTHokie2000 02/13/22 12:47 AM ET
I'd like to play WVU every year. But we aren't doing it now, so that is
Maroon Baboon 02/13/22 01:30 AM ET
I'm not sure NC State "could live" without playing Wake since they
VTHokie2000 02/14/22 01:21 PM ET
To be honest
Millpoint 02/11/22 10:22 AM ET
I wouldn't assume that WVU would get stuck with L'ville
VTHokie2000 02/12/22 06:22 AM ET
NC State is probably another that needs 3 (UNC, Wake, Clemson)
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 01:58 PM ET
Gawd, HOKIES getting into the weeds AGAIN
Mercury 02/10/22 09:31 AM ET
UVa needs to keep playing UNC.
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 01:19 PM ET
As long as VT gets to maintain that heated rivalry with BC**
Millpoint 02/09/22 07:30 PM ET
That's who we are going to get stuck with in that plan.**
EDGEMAN 02/09/22 09:59 PM ET
The only way the ACC will ever let VT get a divorce from BC
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 10:32 PM ET
That's why we don't need "permanent rival" games!
EDGEMAN 02/09/22 10:46 PM ET
This x 1000**
hokie4ever 02/10/22 01:25 PM ET
I suspect you (and VT) would be in the minority on that issue
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 01:55 AM ET
BC should play Syracuse, Miami, and Pitt each year. Not VT.
Maroon Baboon 02/10/22 12:04 AM ET
Oh don't worry the ACC will make sure that VT ends up with BC, Syracuse,
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 07:32 PM ET
This makes so much sense for the ACC
Millpoint 02/09/22 01:31 PM ET
That's not necessarily an "always"
Pylons 02/10/22 10:45 AM ET
Then choose two best teams by CFP rankings
Millpoint 02/10/22 08:42 PM ET
I doubt any conference is going to want to crown a champion
Pylons 02/12/22 03:04 PM ET
It will be interesting to see how many conferences do opt to go
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 06:45 PM ET
I can't really see a way that it hurts**
Pylons 02/10/22 11:15 AM ET
It may not be a matter of whether it helps or hurts the conference
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 11:46 AM ET
You brought up the perception of helping or hurting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯**
Pylons 02/10/22 12:05 PM ET
And if you re-read my post then you will I'm not talking about the concept
VTHokie2000 02/10/22 12:19 PM ET
I think the New Big 12 will be in on it too
Millpoint 02/09/22 07:23 PM ET
Given that the Big XII is spread out, it makes sense for that
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 07:30 PM ET
I’d have to think the New Big 12 will do this as well
Millpoint 02/09/22 08:21 PM ET
I noticed you left out BYU. How do they fit into your equation?**
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 08:23 PM ET
I guess they become the new WVU
Millpoint 02/09/22 09:17 PM ET
From a scheduling standpoint, I would think everyone would need to follow
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 10:23 PM ET
As crazy as this sounds
Millpoint 02/09/22 08:15 PM ET
I do see why you say that. At the same time, doesn't the Big Ten
VTHokie2000 02/09/22 08:21 PM ET
Why just two best teams? Let's have a playoff with the four best teams.
