When they want special rules for a team

just because they want to remain independent - that's when and why, and rightly so, other fans care about it. I don't have to convince ND fans of anything - I personally don't care if they join a conference or not - but they shouldn't have their own representative on a committee where all other members represent multiple schools and no rules should apply to just them - a la the previously used "we get the Big East's bowl under xyz conditions."

"We're the only ones that count" perfect summation of the attitude that causes the issue.

CFB Conference winners want more access and less at large bids - no team should get the crazy deference ND does in the polls - all because of ancient history.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing ND, been to both games there. Great history/tradition. The ribbon of honor with every single letterman's name - from every sport - is really cool, one of the best sports displays I've seen. The students entering after everyone else by class, the trumpets under the dome - all really neat. But at this point independence isn't tradition it's arrogannce - and I've had the same discussion with my great ND friend who I sat with at the game.

Why would $85 million not be possible for ND as an independent?
Truthahn 01/21/22 01:09 PM ET
NBC pays ND around 22-23 million a year

Honestly, not sure if this has sarcasm or not

Agree, if ND chooses to accept a pay the players model

Yeah, I see the writing on the wall.

A comment and question about Notre Dame tradition for you and @TerryD
Maroon Baboon 01/21/22 11:16 AM ET
It is beyond a tradition at ND. Independence is what made us the brand we
goldendomer 01/21/22 12:58 PM ET
It is not a "tradition". It is Notre Dame's very identity
TerryD 01/21/22 02:32 PM ET
I think ND threw the origin story away with the partial ACC membership

I didn't say it was noble. I just said it was unique, based on history**
