I decided to exercise the 5-hour calculus part of my brain and do some math

According to Andy Staples in The Athletic, he reviewed the GOR agreement for the ACC and noted that it will cost anyone who leaves $26M per year to get out of the agreement. In an Awful Announcing article from May, they went and estimated the payouts for each league from 2022 to 2029. It should be noted that both the SEC and the Big 10 were to expect a per school payout that would DOUBLE the ACC per school payout by 2029. You heard that right...DOUBLE. It should be noted that this article was published prior to the USC/UCLA move. I also noted that the SEC surpassed the Big 10 in revenues in that analysis which likely prompted the additions to their league. Now, it has been a while since I took 5-hour Calculus but doing some math in my head, if an SEC school, as the article states, is expected to make $105M per school by 2029 and my penalty for leaving the ACC GOR agreement is $26M per year, then by 2029, if Tech moved to the SEC, they would be almost $80M to the good per year on that transaction. If you gave me those numbers, my decision making gets pretty simplified. If I were sitting in Burruss Hall in a very big, President's office, or in a very big ADs office, I would be working the phones to cut a deal with my friends at Clemson, FSU, and someone in North Carolina to join the SEC. Period. Full Stop. With this move by the Big 10, the SEC will need to counter and protect a flank in the mid-Atlantic. Tech entering the league will give the SEC a brand new market and "home team" access to the Washington DMA which is in the top 10 in the country and is not on the list of those owned currently by the SEC. The Big 10 has Maryland, so they do not need to move into Virginia, but the SEC does for sure. To me, partner up, negotiate a good buyout deal, and make a boat load of cash to help the SEC fly into new markets and fortify their position as the best college football league. I think we really need to be proactive instead of reactive. When you play a lot of defense, you tend to lose and I prefer to be on offense in this conversation. ** Edited by CobbCountyHokie at 7/4/2022, 4:16:26 PM

I decided to "excise" the 5-hour calculus part of my brain a long time ago.**

The GoR is not about money

Since this case would likely be in federal court, it would be a jury trial.**
tarheelblue 07/04/22 08:08 PM ET
If true, that means anything could happen, depending on the jury.**

Sadly, he's dead wrong about the $26M.
daveinop 07/04/22 05:25 PM ET
He's wrong. If an ACC school jumps to the SEC and the media rights are $106
133743Hokie 07/04/22 04:52 PM ET
Exactly. The GoR is misunderstood.

Any plan that involves UNC is going to involve you know who. Not VT.
Maroon Baboon 07/04/22 04:50 PM ET
To get UNC UNC insist they do not want VT and take UVA
Mercury 07/04/22 05:32 PM ET
Agree. And it only takes one school to get the ball rolling. Let's go
IB4TECH 07/04/22 05:29 PM ET
Correct. UVa trumps us in both SEC or BIG10 sadly. We fly solo**

These articles all miss something enormous from their analysis

My interest in college football has been waning for years due to the $$$

What does.......
2hhoop3 07/04/22 05:05 PM ET
All conferences have a business year for tax purposes. During that period

Thanks.....
2hhoop3 07/04/22 05:35 PM ET
Yep.
RJHokie 07/04/22 04:43 PM ET
Its spelled out in the GOR. ACC gets departing teams media revenue each yr.
133743Hokie 07/04/22 04:55 PM ET
But wouldn't that be limited to a degree?
Atlee Hokie 07/04/22 05:40 PM ET
No……it’s whatever VT is entitled to from whatever conference it belongs to.
RJHokie 07/04/22 05:49 PM ET
So, my understanding is correct.
RJHokie 07/04/22 05:11 PM ET
Unless their new conference is willing to subsidize them
tarheelblue 07/04/22 08:12 PM ET
did your 5 hour calc brain figure out
vtka93 07/04/22 04:27 PM ET
Agreed. Posted on VT Scoop
TabbHokie 07/04/22 04:23 PM ET
But SEC or B10 wouldn't be able to monetize new team's inventory...
jesuisvtguy 07/04/22 04:35 PM ET
The schools leaving would buy out the GOR
mrcaniac 07/04/22 04:52 PM ET
No, that's incorrect. If they are getting $106M from their new conference
133743Hokie 07/04/22 05:29 PM ET
You assume.......
