You can also throw out your view on P5/G5 with the bathwater too because

it doesn't exist anymore. We essentially live in a P2 world because the Big Ten and SEC will eventually want to do their own thing and leave everyone else behind including the Big XII. If other conferences want a seat at the table, then doing division level membership by sport may be the only way to salvage a seat because the Big Ten and SEC will want to protect their non-revenue sports too particularly the sports where the majority of participating schools are not from a power conference.
