I haven't been able to find any news articles or even message boards to
support that idea. I did find a message board post talking about Johns Hopkins possibly move its women's lacrosse program from DIII to DI so it could join the Big Ten. If Johns Hopkins is considering the idea, then I would be curious to know your source because I would be curious to read any articles you have come across on that subject.
If Johns Hopkins is serious about the move, then it will need to address 2 issues related to football and 1 issue related to Title IX. The first issue, Johns Hopkins' football stadium (Homewood Field) only has a capacity of 8,500 which will not meet the DI-FBS minimum requirements. The second issue, which is connect to the first issue, is whether the Big Ten would want Johns Hopkins to compete in the DI-FBS for football or be allowed to compete in the DI-FCS. If the Big Ten requires Johns Hopkins to compete in the DI-FBS, then the Blue Jays would need to increase the capacity of Homewood Field to at least meet the minimum capacity requirement. More than likely Johns Hopkins would need to increase it by 3x, 4x, or 5x the current capacity. There may not be enough interest in Blue Jays football to justify that expense. The 1 Title IX issue is Johns Hopkins would need to increase the number of women's sports it sponsors and/or cut some of the men's sports it sponsors to offset the increase of 85 full count scholarships that is required to compete in DI-FBS football or 63 equivalent scholarships that is required to compete in DI-FCS football.
Now I could Johns Hopkins decide to move some of its other non-revenue sports to DI and possibly join the Big Ten. It would be a way to bypass the 12 year transition requirement. However, there may be limits on the number of sports a DII/DIII school can have competing at the DI level. I have not come across anything in the DI Manual (aka bylaws), but there may be other policy documents out there that I don't know about.
